Lotsa talking distracts people from the smell, y'see.
Since people are too stupid to multitask effectively, all they can do is listen (and if they're talented enough, breath). It's a rare case when someone's able to listen and smell at the same time. But that small group of people are extremely rare to come across, so talking as a distraction works most of the time.
