A lot a lot and a lot. When you use the normal saves, it sometimes gets irritating because it just takes a lot longer to do and you have to find them in certain games. Also, quick save type things are really useful for things in games that require chance, so you only have to do it once and load if it misses or something. Thank God Visual Boy Advance exists.

Liberally, very liberally. Especially in games like Fire Emblem or Super Robot Wars. Sure it's essentially cheating, but I've just gotten into a habit of it.

saving states is the only way I have beaten some games, I use it in all of my games at least more than 5 times.

Use up to about 6 or 7, deppending on the game, keep the 1st save state for the the nearest safe area, number 2 in semi safe, some what dangerous, but nothing i cant get my self out of, 3 for danger areas, 4 of risky choices, that way i dnt like it just load and try again 
and 6 and 7 may be for major game choices that affect the story, i keep those if i find something big happens should i choose the other

I never use save states. It's pretty annoying for me when I can just save in the game itself. It's like cheating if you can save and come back to the EXACT spot later.

I am an impulsive saver. I need the save so I can pick out good stats for all my units in FE. In Golden Sun, I just don't want to die. ><

I use save states before entering a dungeon and another into it.I've a few bad experience with saves states (like in FF1, I've been poisoned in a fight and cannot got back into the town in time ...), so regular saves are useful also
