Howl swallowed a star which was the flame demon that powers his moving castle. The curse is that his heart is taken away from his body and that the flame demon holds posession of it. So should the demon die or gets fanned out, he also dies. If I remember correctly, his curse is that he is slowly losing his human instincts into that of an anime, hence why he has a hard time reverting back to his human form from a black eagle form or humanoid black eagle form.
