Save States are better. They can work as back-up if something happen to the game.

i kinda agree that save states are like cheating! haha...i use it too!!! not proud of it hahaha.... states increases your luck (like cheating ü) while avid gamers tend to use in-games. if u wanna play clean, use in-game!

I use save states whenever something comes up that forces me to quickly quit (such as some authority figure who does not approve of ROMs, or when someone wants me to do something for them). Also, I will use them before major plot events (such as when I'm forced to make some sort of choice). I use the in-game saves as backup, and transferring between some emulators.

The only bad part about save states is that it is not in the game meaning you can't go to the title screen and open the file.

If its a game like Shining Soul 1+2, I prefer In-game because u can just choose ur character, almost like a MMORPG.

I only save states if the mission is about to take too long to restart if I fail to accomplish a certain thing and fail the mission (like in Rockman EXE Games. Some Missions take at least 10 minutes to finish)

I only use save states when I'm just before something really important, just to be safe.

I find that in game saves are useful sometimes, like games that have New Game + in them. If you only use save states, you won't have a saved game to use the + in.

I use save states for general save, but the in-game save is a really good way of having a back up.How many times did I overwrite the wrong slot and have to restart the entire game because I didn't have any in-game saves? Two saves are better than one...

I use save states as a way to practice certain things (mario skills, metroid dont screw ups etc). But if im truly playing a game I will try to avoid save states, because for me it detracts from the fun if I can't lose lives.

I like game states because if I have to leave the pc in a hurry I don't have to do everything over and because some games only have a couple ingame files to save in but we might have several family members playing the same game. This lets me save without messing up someone elses game.
