I have tried playing them countless times, and I still don't get it. Is it the story? Is it the gameplay? Is it the graphics? What is it?

I guess it's not for everyone then. Hard to say why, but for most people, their first few RPG games may be FF games, and they are what got them hooked on RPGs to begin with. Sure there were other RPGs around, but the vast majority of people started with the FF series. It's like comparing Microsoft to other computer companies, it just seemed to be there first. I like it because of the characters, the job classes, the storylines (although they have gotten worse lately) and gameplay.

Depends on the game. Some FFs have great gameplay and story, others are absolutely mediocre.

What I like about the games is the story. It seems that the story is involved and some real thought was put into it.

It's the characters for me. You start to like them and you wanna know what happens to them so you finish the game which itself is kinda nice too.

As mentioned earlier, it depends on a particular FF game. The games in the FF series aren't significantly connected in terms of the stories. Each game seems to take place in a different "world" with exceptions like FFX-2. So basically, while the FF games as a whole are generally recognized as one big "series", I view each game individually. At its best, the games are a combination of great story, great/fun gameplay, great music, and great design. One factor in FF's impact in console gaming history is due to the fact that it was one of the pioneers of early RPGs on the consoles. FF was a great game but also it benefited from good timing. If the game came out later than it did, it may not have had as great an impact. As many gamers from the late 80s/early 90s played FF and its sequels, it holds a special place in their memories.

I'm actually kinda shocked that someone played an RPG (especially a Final Fantasy) and didnt enjoy it. Never seen that myself.I dont really think which game you played has that much of a influence on your opinion. If he wasnt gonna like it, he probably wouldnt have even if he was playing the best Final Fantasy game or the best RPG available. The main reason why I like RPGs is because its closer to a movie than a game. People prefer movies over games because the stories in films get you hooked easier. The characters and the plot make you want more and more. And in most cases, you create a bond with those characters. Almost as if you knew that person in the story, which is why you laugh or cry when watching films. Now with RPGs its kinda of the same. The game and the plots are so enjoyable that you almost forget at times that its a game. I personally know a few friends (and I'm sure many here do too) who cried during games like when a character dies. This is why IMO, if you didnt like an RPG, you probably werent gonna like it no matter which one you played. Cuz you clearly werent playing it for the reasons that RPG fans play them for.

The appeal is different for each game. I mean, I absolutely love 4, 6, and 7, for instance. I loathe 5 and 10. 8 has its own appeal, and 9 to a lesser extent.I would say that, generally, it's a balance of gameplay, story, artistic and technical prowess that gives the games their charm. You purchase a Final Fantasy title and you know there's at least some quality going into it.

Great point. One constant in the FF games, whether you like them as games or not, is that there is always a high standard of quality in the games.

it is because of how diff each of em are. story line is always diff.characters are always diff.wat i mean is, because of how successful the first final fantasies are, that the makers of the next one tries their best to make it better, and diff from the first one.and juz beacause of the series Final Fantasy, many people buy em and juz expects another great game... and really, it is worth the wait for the next.

First of all, final fantasy is an RPG. What is more better than going through a game and leveling up to the max to take out your enemy. I have played alot of final fantasy games and the most addictive one id have to say is Final Fantasy X. It was the first FF game for PS2 and i still think they should make a FFX-3 where Titus fights one last time beside Yuna. :wtf:

They are just very good rps with very good story lines usually. Also the cast of characters tends to be better than most games. BUt you have to like RPGs to like the FF games.

If you don't like FF then you don't like RPGs. At least Japanese RPGs.

That's actually kind of ignorant. I don't like Final Fantasy, but I like some Japanese RPGs a little bit. I also like Paper Mario and Pokemon, so...yeah, you're just wrong.

You said yourself, "a little bit." It's not like I said it was a proven fact that you got to like FF to like Japanese RPGs. It's simply that are FF titles that are some of the best Japanese RPGs ever made, like FFVI.It's like saying "I love FPS but Halo sucks." There might some people that think that way but you know it just won't be that many.

I like Zelda. I used to like Pokemon (still good, but not that into it anymore). I liked Phantasy Star. I'm pretty sure all three are RPG's. Whoa, and they are Japanese, too.

Zelda is action adventure game not an RPG. Pokemon is a pretty simple RPGs for just anyone (besides all the fandom behind them). Maybe FF is too complex for ya?No clue and Phantasy Star though, never played it but it looks like a pretty normal turn based RPG. So what did you like about it?There are more than a dozen of FF titles and you really never like a single one?

For me, FF is the best series ever. there are several factors that make this series so good, I love the stories, the Characters, the character development, the settings, the fantasy, the fact that is an RPG, the revolutionary battle system, etc.
