When I had GB Advance. i always used to keep sound off to save battery until i bought GBA SP.GBA Sp has such a huge battery life why not enjoy gameplay with sound. :(

I only turn the sound off when the noise starts to annoy me, otherwise the sound is fine. Battery life is no problem if you get rechargeable ones.

I prefer to listen to the game until I get fed up with the BGM, then I turn it off if there's no option to do so in the options menu. Sadly, that is often the case with some of the original gb games which I play on the GBA SP. Most of the time I find I don't really need the sound to get into the game.
