Ugh...I can't believe Diamond released HD 4870 1GB which, with after rebate, costs about the same as my HD 4870 512 MB...I...am...gonna go cry now. :awesome:

A 4850 is still OK, granted. But how does a bigger screen screw the functionality of a graphics card? =\ A GPU simply generates the O/P and sends signals to the monitor, projecting which on the screen, regardless of how big it is, is the task of the mechanism within the monitor itself, right?Besides, he's got a 4870 already, not 4850... the VRAM is the only difference.

If he has a bigger screen he would play games at higher res, the 4850 workers fine max'd on all/most games at lower res but when it gets higher the 4870 will be need, the double ram well also help with this along with the fact that its a better card.i wasnt just talking about normal use i was talking about games cause really and ture you would only get a good gfx card for games or maybe some high demand graphics progarm.

When you up the resolution of a game, you will also up the VRAM requirements. So, running Crysis at 1280x1024 will require less VRAM than say 1900. Because the GPU have to do more work to render the frame. And higher resolution means more pixels per frame. Hence, more work for the card. Also, using anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering also eats up VRAM. Triple buffering also eats up VRAM. What the GPU use VRAM for is just temporarily store data and access it when the monitor give the go. So, when doing the above tasks with little VRAM, some frames are gonna be dropped, hence the frame skip. When there are more than enough VRAM, the game will go smoother, because there's enough VRAM to store everything until the monitor is ready for the next frame. :gs:

I never even use AA and rarely use anisotropic filtering... Anyway, I have a 17", I still do OK with 1024x768, so that's why I was asking. You must be used to playing at maxed res all the time XD For me, raising the res never really impacted performance much though. Nowhere near as much as antiviruses did, at least =\ BTW, can anyone tell me what config is good for how much antialiasing? I have a 2.4G quad and a 8400SE with 512 MB VRAM... With that configuration, if FSAA is even 4x, my game gets choppy... Will the 8800GT cards solve this? I mean, which cards and processors are good enough for 16x AA? It looks a pretty far-fetched dream to me XD

AA and AF are more of a GPU thing than a CPU thing. I would say 8800GT is good for AA and AF. Your 8400se is probably considered low end because I cannot even find a review for it. XD And yeah...I max out AA and AF settings because it looks awesome. Oh...and my max res is like 1280x1024. 19" monitor from Black Friday 2 years ago. Took me a while to save up money for this 4870 and it was worth it. XD That's why I feel bad when they release 4870 1gb at the same price. XD

My old main computer was running off an ATI Radeon X1950XTX with 512mb GDDR4 ram.A bit later on, I decided to throw that 1950 to my HTPC and put an Sapphire Radeon HD3870X2 1gb GDDR3 ram.Now that I've changed for this new tower since a few months ago, I went on a rampage and put 2 Palit Radeon HD4870X2 2gb GDDR5 ram onto the system on Crossfire X.I can say, the computer runs really smoothly on maxed settings for any game I threw at it up to date, but oh boy is it a furnace... During summer, I could feel that heatwave emitting from my tower...

I have an Nvidia GeForce 9600m GT Hybrid, with 512mb of memory running on my laptop. I am unsure of what is in my desktop, all I know is it's ATI. Not used it since I got the laptop!

I WAS running a Nvidia Ge 7600 which blew out on me the other day, so I'm stuck surfing on this PoS 8gb harddrive 10 year old onboard graphics can't run ANYTHING (Did I mention its a PoS?) computer. The next week is gonna suck. Not sure what I'm upgrading to yet, but it'll be better than the 7600 :waaa:
