I'd like to know your collective ideas for the least cliché RPG hero. Perhaps one that doesn't begin the game by waking up in his room or being late for something. Maybe one that isn't 15-21 years old or (WONDER OF WONDERS..) DOESN'T WEILD A SWORD.Ideas? Sound off!

The Suikoden heroes. Only one uses a bladed weapon(not counting the ones from 3-in fact i'm counting out 3 for several reasons: there's 3 main characters and that it's somewhat difficult to decide which one gets runes). None of them get the girl, mainly because most are cursed with true runes and don't age. Not to mention that the hero from the first one carries a Soul Eater that sucks up love ones or the hero from 4 who carries the rune of Punishment that can get the user. Fun Times XDNow to non-cliche. Well the bad boy has been done to death already as well as the goodie goodie so what does that leave us: the one caught in the middle? I suppose that could work, with a player deciding what the character eventually becomes. Fallout is a good example, you can save your vault or screw around and be a boxer, pimp, or just go get a hooker.

I actually agree with the suggestion that Ness fits this. Earthbound's plot goes pretty differently than that of most RPG's. Yes, goal is a bit cliché, but the execution of it was amazing. When I was playing it, I wasn't quite sure I liked the game, but it was something completely different. Illusion of Gaia also comes to mind. The hero uses a staff and depends on mental strength much of the time. Another truly non-cliché one would be either of the Galerians games. They are both kind of creepy and strange though. There are a lot of people who wouldn't enjoy playing them, just because of how strange they can get. Your hero actually uses no weapon at all. Some of your enemies do, but you use nothing but your psychic abilities and drugs to stimulate them. Also in the Wild Arms games your hero has no sword, technically, though it does have a blade on the end in... both i think, although he's still a bit cliché, at least in the first two.I'll keep thinking, but that's all I've got for now.

Planescape: Torment The hero wakes up after dying for the umpteenth time, the first "person" he meets is a floating, talking skull with an attitude and nobody knows his name.Final Fantasy X-2An all-chick team and nobody has to wield a sword.Tales of LegendiaThe main character uses unarmed combat, unlike previous installments of the series.

Yorien says:I think most "heroes" said here NOT wielding a sword are still cliché characters. No matter they use Staffs (Illusion of Gaia), unarmed combat (Legaia, Legendia,...), guns (FFX, Megaman,...); they all are the same old "gotta save the world 'cause I'm the only one who can do it" crap. A hero is not different just by not wielding swordI think we must look further for "different" hero types.I agree in Harvest Moon; that's a trully "different" hero. Also, Morte from Planescape: Torment, though not the main hero, really is different from all other "hero" characters... I think being a sarcastic talking skull is different (hey, look... he wields no sword!!!)Posted ImageOther kinda different type of hero could be the "characters" from "The I of the Dragon" .. mainly because... well... you play as a dragon.Yorien Dragonard

What about Kalas from Baten Kaitos? Sure he uses a sword, but he isn't the typical main lead.

What about the hero from Evolution, Mag was his name I think. He uses a giant hand to attack people, and nobody uses swords. And the Butler, Gre, Fights to. Old butler+ rifle > all.

The hero from Dragon Quest VIII, he doesnt talk at all

Sorry, but that's been done many times. Just ask any Chrono Trigger fan. However, Dragon Quest VIII's hero does score points for being a castle guard - maybe I haven't played enough games, but that doesn't seem too common among main heroes. I'm not too far in DQVIII yet, though...
