They're pretty much all cliches, but what it ends up boiling down to is whether or not a character is something a creator thought was a good idea that they wanted to take in their own direction and style, or whether the character is just some blatant ripoff due to lack of originality. The characters that seem to be the most original are usually the cliches that had the best personal touches put into them, therefore giving them their own life.I guess it's hard to find originality these days, but if something is derived from something else but given it's own unique qualities, then it's usually just as good.

My vote also goes to Harvest Moon- it's often lightyears away from "Save the world with your heroic deeds!"Actually, I also thought that Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 doesn't fit very much into the cliche, especially in the beginning? I was decently surprised when he said something like he's only doing the work for the money... Link or Mario or Megaman or Samus Aran or Ash(pokemon) Never complain, at least in my knowledge. (of course, except Samus Aran, they don't really ever talk, so they can't complain nor say something 'heroic'..)

I'm thinking someone who can be a badass or good, depending on his mood.I liked Dante's demeanor. Chill, badass, funny, and still good.

In the SNES game, The Violinist of Hameln, you play as Hamel and he uses a...of course Violin which is different from the usually swordy slicy stuff.

The whole "save the world" cliche is story driven, not a character trait.I'd have to say Skye from Darkened Skye. She has a gargoyle with an attitude problem as a sidekick, and uses Skittles to cast magic. Skittles!! Now that's hardcore. Not to mention she's a smartass. I just love chars like that.

Anyone who doesn't wake up glowing with unholy beauty. And who fights with a sponge. Oh, and who has a scar or maybe even a prosthetic limb. How come only evil characters have battle wounds?A guy who fights with a sponge should have LOTS.

I'm a bit lost. Are you talking about pen-and-paper RPG heroes? Because if so, you can pretty much create a character you feel is non-typical, because it all depends on the sort of RPG story you'll be going through. A character who's a typical hero in one story might turn up a fool, or worse, in another. I guess your best bet would be to create a character that feels natural. I used to play old pen-and-paper RPGs (GURPS, how I loved you), and I found that it's better to leave some elements of the character intentionally vague--and just roleplay them later on in the game. Most original characters seem to some out better this way. Like my martial artist who has a black belt and is always being pestered (at inopportune times) by a midget who goes "Boss! Boss! Da Plane, Boss! Da Plane!!" :P But if you're talking about PC RPGs, I'm afraid I can't help there.
