The game's own music usually adds to the ambience--but I find MIDIs usually too coarse. So I look for remixes. And play those in the background. :P

It all depends on the game. Slow paced games like Maple Story, fast songs will kick up the mood. My favourite is to listen to songs with a Pipe Organ( think Dracula-like songs) whenever I'm playing LoD at night. That rocks. But fast paced/tempo songs will be my pick. Truth 21c from T-square is my favourite. I doubt anyone has ever heard of this one. Oh, plus Iron Maiden.

Rock when playing a fighting game. Treasured memories of Final Fantasy is recommended while playing any RPG.

i would say it depends on the game that i am playing but if anything i would listen to JPop while playing a game and turn down the volume of the actual game so that you can hear it as background. Maybe Rap/Rock aswell

When I'm playing a game, I listen to that game's music. Game music is one of the most fundamentally overlooked aspects by many developers but playes the second most important role after game-play . Yes, I would say graphics come third, and I think everyone who plays handhelds on a regular basis would agree. Music sets the mood of the game, plays on foreshadowing, or adds a spice of comedy. I think we can all say that our favorite games all have immediatley recognizable music that we sometime catch ourselves humming.I am very surprised about the responses on this thread. I had no idea so many people turn on other music while playing games. It's so alien to me. I really don't understand it.

Game music is by and large absolute monotonous cack! To really enjoy any game you definitely gotta have your favourite music playing - whatever that may be. For me it's gotta be rock. :) B)
