I'd say storyline because it's what attaches me to the game...wanting to know what will happen next.

All of these are exactly as important for me. A rpg could have an excellent storyline but still suck. Take Unlimited SaGa for example. Good story, beautiful graphics, beatiful music, but awful gameplay and battle system. And sometimes a rpg can be excellent without a good story line. Take Paper Mario for example.hehe

1. Storyline - Everybody loves a good story. 2. Battle engine used in the game - for me, action RPG's RULE! 3. Gameplay - Face it: nobody wants to spend a whole game by just grinding. :D

Combination of storyline and battle system. If an RPG can't do that I do consider some of the other points it may have but almost all the time give it a miss if they don't cover the first two.

I think the exploration and the fact you dont feel confined by a generic charater are what count, you make and play how you think.

Frist u just have to have a good storyline period. Then second for me the controls have to be good so that i can play the game. I could care less if there are a few things work with like how hard the game is or how the graphics look. If there is a good story and really bad gameplay that can reallt turn me off to a game. The dawn of mana game that was for the Ps2 last year had a good story to be but i could not play that game at all. The gameplay suxed to no end.

The swords man, the swords! (and all of the above really, FF1 didn't have much of a storyline but it was still awesome!)

Story line for me, if the story line cant keep me interested after the first 20 minutes, its not a very good rpg imo

Definitely true. I used to spend awful amount of time playing D'n'D. But only because of the STORY!!

I like character development and upgrading. I like the music and storyline. The sad moments. The memorable moments.

yeah I'd have to say storyline as well is the number one thing, if the story sucks, there's no reward for your hard work in leveling and exploring. I like the character building, especially when you can re-invent a character like in final fantasy X. Games like Diablo II are also fun for item collecting and getting the "Godly" set up.

I'm most fond of two particular rpg's: Breath of Fire 4 and Chrono Trigger. Their visual and musical aspects have made greater impacts on me than many other "better" rpg's.
