Whelp, when FFIII (FF One for the US, I think) came out, that was so awsome. Now, Final Fantasy is full of pretty boys and consistant storylines and gameplays. Sword of Mana, Tales of Phantasia, and Chrono Trigger were all better than the current RPGs out there in my opinion, because you always had that feeling you never get from the newer RPGs out there... excluding Fable. Now there's a game that was thought out :PDon't get me wrong, the newer ones are good too, just not as good.

i think the old ones had deeper storylines and were less linear, now companies have to make them totally linear so a moron dosn`t go back to hte store every 5 minutes cause there`s more ran one thing you can do and he dosn`t know which one

Of course old rpgs are way better... If you think about it, the new rpgs get their ideas from the old games. XD

I think it's a healthy mix. There were as many rubbish RPGs back in th' day as there are today, and as many insta-hits.People are usually bias about that kinda' thing, choosing to favouritize that 'one' RPG that got them into RPGs. And for people around my age from the US that's usually either FFVI (FFIIIUS) or Chrono Trigger. Here, on the otherhand, we got VERY few RPGs until FFVII, which opened up the flood gates. =P And lo-and-behold, people here favouritize FFVII way over FFVI which was released a short time after FFIX (confusing). Thanks to ROMs I've played countless NES and SNES RPGs, and many have been really really good (Final Fantasy III *the REAL FFIII*, Treasures of the Rudras, Chrono Trigger, Bahamut Lagoon, BoFII, etc) and others really really lame... and the same goes for the many modern RPGs I've bought too.Okay I shut up now!

I'd have to agree, I like the old ones better. While there are many new RPGs that I love, the old ones just hold my interest more. But then, I love old-school gaming. I'm 25, and though I love these new 3D games, I grew up with those old games, and I'll always love them. Give me Chrono Trigger or Earthbound any day. I've played through those two games (and several others) so many times I can't even count. There are actually some listed in this topic that I've never heard of...I'll have to find them.

i think that the general consensus here is that we all dig the older RPGs, which I wholeheartedly agree with. I dunno, I think that there are a number of reasons for this and i'm open to any other opinions. I think that one of the big reasons that they changed is the same thing that has been happening to a films since CG became the major tool for all special FX. You can do anything now and in some ways it's very liberating but it also kills a lot of "clever" creativity also when you dont have to work within certain boundaries. ummm, a fitting example is the new and old star wars films.

As much as I am an oldschool gamer and have to pay homage to our classic 16-Bit games, I don't think that RPGs were better then than they are now. I mean sure we had some mind-blowing ones back then and have some prety crummy ones now, but both of these extremes can be found in any era. If you look at today's GOOD RPGs, they are pretty mind-blowing too... Look at Oblivion, for example. People would cream their pants at the sight of it 10 years ago.

Well I must agree that the some of the RPGs we have today are damn good such( such as The Elder Scrolls series) however when one looks at the situation as a whole we find that quite a lot of the RPGs 'back in the day' were made carefully providing an excellent overall experience whereas these days such problems as rushed production and franchise-milking produce mediocre RPGs that cannot stand up to the old giants.Only Bioware, Bethesda, and some other companies seem to keep the RPG genre going.

Oh yes. Lots of the older RPG's were awesome. The plot actually had some depth, the player had a meaning to play, they were way less linear, ...Of course, there were crappy RPG's too, but the overall quality of RPG's was way higher in the SNES era than it is now.

i do remember one thing.
it took hours and hours but.
by the time i was done with it.
i was so involved. i didn't even know what to think.
i carried it around with me for days. and days.
playing little games.
like. not looking at it for a whole day.
and then. looking at it.
to see if I still liked it.
i did.

You really have to divide old and new games, because if you lump, say Ps1 and older rpgs as old rpgs, then the newer ones will never look good because there's not enough of them compared to older ones. The best way to divide between old and new is pre-ps1 and post-ps1. pre-ps1- filled with gems, the classics, very traditional rpgspost-ps1- updated classic rpgs, 3d graphics but seemingly weaker than the classicsAs for linear stories: there really haven't been too many of them and not enough for either category to win totally. On one hand we have the classic rpgs that are romancing saga and chrono trigger. On the other hand for modern rpgs we have the saga frontier and baldur's gate 2. There just are not many 'do what you want' rpgs out there, which is kind of a shame.

If u've played FF3 or Chrono Trigger on SNES plus other classic RPG's you would agree that the storylines in them were far more original then what big companies like squareenix come out with these days, (not to put them down) theyre still make great games but take FFX2. Worst installment of Final Fantasy Series to date, GO with the classics

No doubt in my mind that the old RPGs are better than our current ones. It seems like companies have run out of fresh ideas and always seem to miss that "x-factor" the old RPGs brought. But don't get me wrong, some great RPGs have came out in the past couple of years.

New games are what I like to call garbagy. Old Rpgs such as Chronotrigger and super mario rpg are better because playing the new ames is a whole production.

First off to answer the topic i beleive that the older rpgs were better. Me i like having an rpg where if i want to get up and go get something to eat i can just set the controlloer down at anytime and do it. without coming back dead. Also I liked that most of the rpgs had some puzzles in them and in some instances like in lufia 2 there are tons and plenty of them arent lacking for challenge. Also it actually seems like the fans are killing their own rpgs by actually buying the pieces of crap that people like squaresoft are putting out so they have no need for quality control because the dumbasses who like a series are unwilling to force the companies to have standards i mean its only good business. if you can spend less money in developing a product and since it doesnt matter what quality that you make it people will buy it anyway. It would actually be stupid of them to stop doing it. Also the newer rpgs seem like they are more cutscene than game. I mean in the older games you usually only had 2-5 cut scenes intro, ending, And any major plot change. It wasn't like every 5 minutes your watching a 5 minute cutscene. it was every couple hours your watching a 30-60 second cutscene and you were irritated by that. i mean intros and ending scenes were different intor was usually about 5 min and ending was usually about 15min because of credits. Also the older rpgs actually had new ideas and all the newer ones seem to do are add a little bit to the older ideas. Also they actually had battles that were difficult even if you leveled for a long time and not because the boss used some cheap move either. I miss the games that if you move more than a few steps from your starting town and run into the wrong guy a few steps away you were dead in 2-3 hits. There should be challenge to a game. Not like it is now where they are designed for people with the problem solving skills of a retarded 3 year old. In the old games you actually learned problem solving skills and were smarter for having beaten the game. for instance super metroid i remember beating it in 11 hours and 43 minutes with %100 complete and feeling happy with myself. They are not supposed to be easy like the new ones are. They are supposed to be hard. As i see it all games should be played through the first time on the hardest difficulty available and the easier ones are for screwing around in a game after youve beaten it. They should be more like super mario world one where once your out of lives you start over. and less like supermario world 3 where you can continue and continue and continue as much as youd like.So in summary The old ones are better because of being turn based more often a higher challenge level. and because they cannot be completed by retarded toddlers.

Yes, I love old strat. RPGs. Shining force rocks. And you cant beat the collection the NES, sega and snes had. Most of the RPG's on snes were pretty darn good. Today it's a crap shoot.

Can't beat the old. Developers nowadays are focusing too much on the graphics and what-not, instead of focusing on the story. Old RPGs have some of the best stories, like Chrono Trigger. New games don't leave a mark like the way classics do.But don't get me wrong, there are still games now that stand out.

I prefer a lot of the old rpg's such as CT and SoM to many of the new ones, but GoldenSun stood out as one of the new rpg's that was worth buying. *votes for old = better*

Indeed, old RPGs > New RPGs, IMO.FFVI > FFVII > FFXChrono Trigger > Chrono CrossSeiken Densetsu III > Legend of ManaRomancing Saga III > Saga FrontiersTactics Ogre > FFTThere are exceptions, however, as with anything.Breath of Fire III > BoF 1 & 2Valkyrie Profile > everybodyIt's a healthy blend for sure, but when it boils down to it, old school has more, better RPGs, than the new school.

The old games are the best. They have better stories and they don’t have cinematics that last days. Don’t get my wrong I like new RPGs and I like cinematics but why are they so long?
