Old Rpg were better than the new ones because the story was a lot better and you want to continue the story and not stop playing. you want to finish them and when you finish them you want to get another of these RPG and start it right away.

I prefer the older ones, there were more to choose from and they were really good. The consoles of today are lacking quantity and alot of them are also lacking quality.

A good RPG may be made at any chosen point in time. But Chrono Trigger will forever have a place in my heart.

A lot of people have mentioned this already, but the reason a lot of people choose older RPGs is that they remember the one good game that they played and forget the 20 bad ones.

I don't judge an RPG by how old it is. There will always be good and bad RPGs, no matter when it was made. Although, it seems to me that in the older days they pumped out a lot of RPGs. Most were bad, but there were a few gems in there. Lately there is less of a variety in the quality of the RPGs. In the ones that I have played and seen at least.I perfer Dragon Quest VIII to the original Dragon Warrior on NES, but I perfer Final Fantasy on NES (I in US, III in Japan) to all of the newer versions that I've played.

The only new RPG I have to give credit to is FF7, as the storyline was decent and engaging. Other than that, most new RPGs are more about eye-candy than making a decent game. When the NES RPGs came out, they knew the limitation of the console, and to make up for it with story. Much the same way that movies are more about SFX than the storyline nowadays, RPGs have slowly lost the rich, non-linear (in most cases) storylines and have fallen into the "bang-whiz" type of game.

old rpg's are WAAAY better especielly in the gfx!! the graphics of the snes own and it isnt gross 3d modelsI mean compare super mario rpg to mario&luigi searies or paper mario! Those 2 games dont even use a proper battle system and are to predictable8 dmg against boss per turnyou take 2 per turnthe boss is deadu beat the big boss!If only games can be as great as super mario and rpg once was..we need a level editor for smrpg that is as simple and easy as lunar magic :P

Well, it depends of your point of view. If you want a chalenging rpg, try the old ones. The old ones put much more on the exploration and journey than any other new rpg. It just don't tell exactly where you should go, or to whom you should speak. It let the player form your own path through the game.Nowadays, can anyone really say for sure that got stuck without knowing were to go? That's the difference of new rpg games. They are somewhat too linear, and almost marks where you should go. I don't know why that change in the rpg style. It goes so far as blocking your way to earlier places, so you can focus only on the new objective. What looks more friendly to one player, it can make more skilled ones look away. The only chalenge is: get stronger to win battles. So, old ones are better? It depends if you are skilled, or new to rpg world.Sorry if it got too long.

A lot of them are more "original," because hey, they ARE the original. So definitely Final Fantasy I, Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, and Terranigma are all great choices. However, I am still a fan of Golden Sun, so it depends.

I think old generally had better stories, but there are good new rpgs. Personally I think the story for FFX is amazing. I also like the stories for alot of older games like SoM, FF2, 3, 5, BoF, BoF2, etc. the battles havent evolved much in the basic turn based, but they have gotten more technical things like how status ailments have changed and how leveling up can be customized, etc.

There are alot more old RPGs I like than the new ones. Lufia, FF early series, Chrono trigger, Tales of Phantasia, the list goes on. Now a days the games are alright and I like them but I want to play a game like those ones that really keeps you coming back to it. Not many of those these days.

I'm kinda torn on this subject. On one hand, the graphics and characters look a lot better today, and they seem to be willing to add bits of humor and more interesting sidequests and minigames. On the other hand, a lot of games fall prey to thinking that the gameplay and story don't matter, and often shuck what fans liked for having pretty graphics and a close resembalance to something that's already got a fanbase.Take Breath of Fire. The first one was fairly weak, but BOF2 is easily my favorite game of the series, and BOF3 a close second. BOF4 and 5, however, both irritate the hell out of me because it's all about 'combos', and 'replay value' and none of the villians get the one-sided butt-kicking they truly deserve.BOF5 wouldn't have been that bad if they'd hadn't tacked it to the original BOf storyline. As for BOF4.... I hated it. I liked Ursula, the stuttering dog samurai was kinda cool, Ershin and Deis were a little interesting, but everyone else could keel over and die and I wouldn't give a flaming rat patootie. I HATED Fou Lu, the Sephiroth Clone, and I hated the dragons. None of them even LOOKED like dragons OUGHT to.

I think the older ones were better. They kept my interest more on the game itself instead of graphics and whatnot. Graphics mean nothing to me.

I'm not sure how old you want to go. I think the RPGs for 64 and Playstation were the best. SNES had some really solid ones too. But I think 64 and Playstation were the Golden Age of RPGs...and video gaming in general. But SNES had really great games. Maybe the Golden Age was right when 64 and Playstation came out, but people were still making SNES games and playing them.
