It depends doesn't it? Some old RPGs have great storylines, but the best is when there is a series of that game, then the newer version could be fun, and the newer ones has better graphic(most of the time) than the older version, so I guess it depends on your interests~

As far as I can tell there really isn't a whole lot of difference between RPG's over the years, other than MMORPGs which I dislike because it's stupid to have to pay money for a game, then pay MORE money to play it!That said, I like some of the older RPGs, but I think I like the stories of the new ones more. The improved graphics help with the suspension of disbelief as well. I personally find it kinda hard to care a lot about a small square moving around, but if it looks human and has more feeling to it, I get much more into the game.

There are many older RPG that are better than the new ones. Well seriously if youlike the genre RPG you didn't exactly came to love the genre due to graphics right? Don't be lazy noobs and check out many great older RPG titles.

New ones for sure. Even games like FF7 are pretty arcane. I think the old "classic" rpg style just reflects a genre that wasn't completely well thought-out. If you like turn-based battles, that's okay, but there are still ways to streamline that experience, and I definitely don't think anybody really missed the old "random encounters" that you basically don't see anymore in modern RPGs.New RPG games are better because they focus more on learning and customizing your characters and progressing through the story, not running in circles where the grass grows a little higher for 3 hours so you can beat the next boss.

...not running in circles where the grass grows a little higher for 3 hours so you can beat the next boss.

If you're talking about doing random things to meet certain bosses and such then there isn't much change between Old and new RPGs there.

I think the older ones were better. They kept my interest more on the game itself instead of graphics and whatnot. Graphics mean nothing to me.

I agree. The majority of the newer RPGs were created to serve the graphic whores who make up the majority of the gamer market. For me, story is a much better aspect of a RPG, even if the game is in ASCII.

They are equal, though the old, classic RPGs were good.

I think the older RPGs are better I would have to say lufia II, FF5, FF6, Chrono Trigger, Seiken Densetsu 3 are my top 5 but the newer ones are good to but I would like to see some better story in the newer games.

I really miss the Baulders Gate/Fallout type of RPGs. The tactical ones. Does anyone know of any good new ones?(Old RPGs are the best)

This isn't a specific enough poll. There are some games that are timeless classics(FF 3/Chrono Trigger/Cross) and there are new ones FF12 Which build upon the innovators of the genre and make it better.

While I ove some of the older RPGs, i have to say that there has never been a game so enjoyable to me as Eder Scrolls Oblivion was. all of the things taken for granted (such as spell casting) in the SNES and NES era were made mroe realistic in that you had to learn them, and you coud create spells and....well i guess what i am saying is the newer games have a little more basis for reality. Actions have more consiquences... dont get me wrong i love seeing my little FF1 character start in the middle of a world for no real reason with no background and just start walking.... but the depth of the current games gives something much more worthwile.

I'm going to say yes. If i remember correctly, there was a book put out several centuries ago describing approximately 20 different scenarios for stories and the like. The problem with RPG's today is that they all follow the same general plot line. There have only been about 5 of those scenarios used throughout all of gaming, and there could be so much more. Also, gameplay hasn't changed hardly at all over the last 10 years or so. Each game has basically the same control system, especially battle systems, and there hasn't been hardly anything revolutionary. The only thing remotely close is the new Zelda game, making use of the Wii and the motion sensing. Personally i look forward to the ps3 to see how developers make use of that systems motion sensing capabilities.

Question's kinda general...classics will always be classics...if we're talkin something like FF or Diablo or whatnot, then yes old trumps new...uh actually, it seems like most of the new rpgs just go and repeat themselves over and over again...

There are good RPG's in the old and new columns as well as bad... but in my opinion the best RPG's aren't the new ones or the old ones, but the ones that came in between.

I feel the same.Except it might just be nostalgia blinding me.To be honest, I haven't played any super modern RPGs. Latest I've played through is FF X. Got about halfway through FF12 and got tired.
