linear combat style, like tales of phantasia/destiny, if you've never played them, get a SNES emu, and get the translated version of tales of phantasia (the official translation on GBA sucks)

Probably action... it's one of the few that doesn't bore me to death.The only other RPG game that isn't the one i voted would have to be Fire Emblem..... but that's the only one.

Action Turned based, and pure turned based and simulation are my favorites and I voted for simulation. But I also like MMORPGs because you actually interact with real people which sometimes proves to be not so good.

It's pretty much a flip-up between pure turn-based and action turn-based.

Since my favourite game is the Golden Sun series, my favourite kind of rpgwould be puzzle rpg. I also really like pokemon games which can be considered as a turned-based with a part of puzzle rpg.

There's so much potential in the RPG genre that's left untapped because game developers have realized that if they were to make that "ultimate" role-play...they'd have no need to make any other games, and the genre would die. It's a pity, because I want to play (no...MAKE) that game. That aside...I agree with the contingency of the thread: classicly "good" RPG's are not necessarily what the name would imply. But, of course that's arguable. In Final Fantasy titles, you do, as the player, play the role of the character in their world and story line. You simply have no means of changing this story line or playing outside of it. The feel of these games are not to have you, or your game-play preference, reflected in the character. The character plays his role as the character would, not as you would. In this essence, perhaps this sub-genre ought to be a "Cinematic RPG".Arcanum (which would be the forebearer still in games for proper character development systems) and Fable would be the two games that staple down what the current perception is of RPG's: you play a role in the game. Elder Scrolls also brings this to the forefront, but, really, you are again trapped in the story line, and unable to alter it. You can always ignore it, however. I suppose that's a choice, but perhaps more of a lack of one. Tangeant aside, Arcanum leaves the game totally open ended, rarely even imposing the story line, or any definitive reason to complete it. You live in that game however you wish. Fable was not innovative in the concept of character development, but in the concept of consequence, so it's here I'll list my sub-genres.Note: Games cannot possibly fit into a single sub-genre, just as music cannot always fit perfectly into it's set sub-genres.The Cinematic Role-play: Final Fantasy series, Chrono Trigger, Grandia, etc...{This genre is based soley on its completion of a pre-concieved story. Character development does not always pertain to a skill tree system.}The Good vs. Evil Role-play: KotOR, Fable, etc...{This genre, again, does not allow escape from a pre-concieved story, but allows for character decisions to affect the alignment of a character, and choose from a set of alternate endings.}The Character Development Role-play: DiabloI & II, Guild Wars, Jade Empire, Arcanum, etc...{This genre trades complex story for exception character control, where levelling is required to build your character to your liking. Story-line is usually driven towards repetiive themes of thousands of minion kills...}The Character Build Role-play: All AD'n'D/D'n'D titiles, Elder Scrolls, etc...{This genre allows for complete control over the protagonists' characteristics, allowing for less devellopment than the genre above, but regains much in terms of story complexity and involvement.}Hack 'n' Slash Role-play: Diablo I & II, Dyntasy Warriors titles, Legend of Zelda titles, etc...{This genre focusses on a more adventure style game play, based on the slaying of enemies and immediately involving puzzles and missions. Character development, skill-wise or otherwise, remains optional.}The Strategic Role-play: FF Tactics, Tactics Ogre, Kingdom Hearts, Imperial Glory, Rome Total War, etc...{Game play revolves on good descision making, and good strategic employment of troops and abilities.}

My favorite rpg's are the later FF games, such as VIII and IX. So I voted for Turnbased+Action rpg's. But I also enjoy Golden Sun and Pokemon.
