Action RPGs all the way! Though I'd say MMORPGs are a close personal second.

I like Turn based the most (Final Fantasy) but all RPG's are fun in their own way, you can't just chose one, and as all RPG types are different, you can't compare one to the other. Its like trying to compare apples to oranges.

I love puzzle RPG's. They are just so challenging, and that's what makes them fun. I'm kind of stating the obvious, but whatever.

I'd have to say Action-Based RPGs, cause Kingdom Hearts was one of the few games I had the attention span to finish. :)

I have a friend who, though disillusioned by square-enix's more recent games, loves old console menu/turn-based "RPG"s. So, because I don't wanna endanger our friendship I'm gonna say what I really feel in a comfortably annonymous setting which may explain why I put quotes around RPG above. RPG stands for Role-Playing Game, or er a game where you play a role! >.> In DND that means a class, an alignment, and a situation. In old console games like FFs (through saaaaaaay 7?), Breath of Fire games, blah blah blah, it means.........you play with characters that have unique abilities? As far as I can see it you aren't playing any role in these games unless you count "saving the world" as a role. There is no non-superficial character development (I can be a dragon now, WOW!), no world contingency ("mommy, why didn't they use a phoenix down on Aeris?"), and no battle strategy (ugh, me press A button). As far as I am concerned these games are amusements that are conveniently named RPGs for lack of a better term. Now, I have to admit I am mostly a PC gamer (ever since FF7 really.........) and I have enjoyed the depth of RPGs especially in the following places.....Story (OMG!): An example of quality story would be Planescape Torment. (Emphasis on quality, I know I will get in a long argument with someone about what stories are quality).Character Development (Game Mechanics): Arcanum, Morrowind, Fallout 2......Character Development (Story): Hmmmm, tough one........ Not common....Will give it to Fable (>.>)Fun and interesting battles: Fallout Tactics (cough), or if that doesn't count for you Star Ocean (SNES ONLY! grrrrrr).Epicness: Did someone say morrowind? (From being killed by everything to leaping small buildings in a single bound. From killing crabs to killing Gods......)Ummmm, well, add your own categories....But what I'm trying to say is that there have been some moments in video game RPGs that are really good but these moments don't really seem to all come together in one game. So, in the interest of someone, somewhere, someday, creating a really really GOOD RPG it'd be wonderful if y'all could tell me what the hell you think makes a good game (with examples). Finally, if you like old-school menu/turn-based RPGs and don't like me degrading them, tell me why you like them (with examples)......

I, like yourself, am not as much of a fan of menu/turn-based rpgs.I mostly agree with your categories of importance. And even though I am not a hardcore gamer (I played 1 of the games you named above) I still have an opinion on the matter. If I had to add a category, I think it would be open-endedness (whoa that sounds weird), meaning you get to do whatever the hell you feel like doing!!! Someone asks you to do a quest...you choose whether you feel like it or not. Another example would be choosing sides (kinda like Baldur's Gate II and, from what I have heard FABLE too), you know between the good and the bad. Also the the quests should be adjusted to the current lvl of the player. What I mean by this is no more fighting random battles for hours just to get your lvl up because you get killed too easily when trying a quest. All of these factors, combined with your own, would make one hell of a game (at least so I think)...
