ok recently i got photoshop CS2 and i had photoshop 5 before so im kinda lost ok anyway when you make a text layer how do you edit the font and style of the text?

Type what you want on a selected layer, then highlite the text and at the top is a bunch of stuff for it. Modes, fonts and what not. You need to keep it on the text tool to edit it.
