As a long time fan of the series, I was brutally disappointed with the North American localisation, so I held off and bought the Japanese version when I was able. It was definitely worth it! I haven't got too far into it yet, but what I've seen so far I like!

I love the DQ series, but I've only been able to play the demo of 8. I'll be playing it very soon, though...As soon as I beat Wild ARMs 4...

DQ8.... THE reason I bought a PS2. I've been a fan since Dragon Warrior for NES days (one of those rabid collectors who have to have every game in a series... I am missing DW III for NES still, but that is about it) so I've been able to see how much the game has evolved. Yes, some of the previous games had small disappointments, but there are none for this game (huge disappoinments for the Brady/Brody/whatever guide though).I find it comical that the hero never speaks. It's like a running gag. Personally, I perfer it that there is no voice actor for him. The voices for the other characters are all perfect for their personallities... I don't think they'd be able to find a perfect voice actor for him, so it's better to have no voice than a bad voice.I am almost done with the game, I only have the last dragon boss from the Dragovian Trials left to defeat (that ultimate dragon), but there is still so much for me to do. Like get my characters to the max level and get enough skill seeds to max out all their skills. :D Even my daughter loves DQ8. She'll ASK me to play hero! And then she'll sit beside me with her controller to "help" me play.Jessica does have some awesome outfits, but I love the Dragovian set for Hero too.

If you like classic RPGs, then play this. Be prepared to spend a heck of a lot time on this one and don't be afraid to spend an hour leveling up.

Good game, story wasn't epic, but good enough to keep the story moving. Characters level up very slowly and bosses are sometimes unfairly powerful unless you over train. I have no beef with the graphics (good), although the british accented VAs were a turn off for me.

Isn't Dragon Quest VIII one helluva long game?

No, Dragon Warrior 7 is longer than DQ VIII. Oh, DQ 8 is much shorter since you can finish within 20 hours or so unless you plan to play monster arena and sidequests which is about 60 hours or so.I like Dragon Warrior 7 better.

Two of you have stated that you find it amusing that the main character doesn't speak. That's because YOU are supposed to be the main character! That has been Yugi Horii's (the creator of DQ) focus all along in every game. If they could find some way for you to interact with the world at a voice level, the main character would talk.I love Dragon Quest VIII too, but if you're willing to play older games. Dragon Quest V (translated, you can download a patch) and Dragon Warrior VII (the original name for the series in the US) are actually the best games. In DQV you start the game as a child and grow up as the game progresses, eventually marrying and having children of your own who fight along side you. What an awesome concept. Plus it is the first game to incoporate monsters in your party, probably the inspiration behind Poke'mon.DQVII/DWVII has this really cool time travel element to it. The characters are very well realized and the world is just amazing as it evolves over the course of the game. Plus, like a more fleshed out version of DQIII, it has a city simulator. I love this game.

I love dragon quest to but i think that dq3 is the best in the series. It was really excited to play this game after playing the flashy ff games and kh games.

Dragon Quest III is my favorite from childhood and the remix on the gameboy color was absolutley superb in every way, well deserving of the very rarely bestowed "10" on IGN. If you haven't tried V or VII, look into it, but if you have I can still appreciate a greater love of III. They are all very close for me but I think the others took what was great about three and went to the next level.
