The first one and the best one is FF 6. Played it on SNES then the remake on PSone and GBA. I guess I'm real geek 
the other ones have more or less let me down (except the 9 maybe) but it should give FF XII a try.

First was 9, and it's also my favorite. I don't know if there's a connection there, I've thought about that, and so I've played every FF at least 3 times each, FF9 I've played over 10 times. It's still just as fun, every single time.

My 1st was 8or7 years ago on a console(it was ff5) then a huge break and 2 years ago i got addicted to the series.played FF 1 , 2 , 4 , 5 , 6 , a little of 7(didn't finish) , 10 , 10-2 , 12(have now)

i played 3 first for SNES. 3/6 is the best final fantasy ive ever played. it has the GREATEST storyline , the most evil villian of all time WOOT Kefka! and there is so many secrets, characters and many many many hours of gameplay.

My first FF was Mystic Quest, but since that wasn't an option I just went ahead and picked 4. MQ still holds a really special place in my heart, though. It was the first game I ever beat all by myself.

Final Fantasy VII was my first... it was the second RPG I've ever played (Super Mario RPG being the first) and I loved it... the first cutscene just drew me in... then the gameplay kept me hooked, then the music, then the atmosphere, followed shortly by the storyline as it unravelled. The opening sequence was such a cinematic one and it really drew me into the series (and the playstation series) lol unfortunately it was a used one from my cousin... and he held on to his memory card... and I was really young and assumed that the game would save to my disc but alas... twas not so... lol so I ended up playing that opening part for a whole two weeks before my mom bought me a memory card to save with

The only FF game ive ever enjoyed was Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced. The rest is crap(except maybe 12 & 13, havent played em yet).

ff7 was my first but just wasn't that good, 8 was omg so horrible, and wasn't much better but 10 and 12 were awesome.
