the original gamboy was my first handheld. i loved that thing. except at night cause i couldnt play. until i got the light adapter thing that burned out my battery

Wow ... I think my first handheld was a Game Gear but I have no idea where it is now. I think I might have given it to my cousin.

I dont konw if it counts as a handheld system but the first kinda one was one of those tetris games, which had like 400 games also inside but all many of them looked pretty much the same. 
If that doesnt count, my first was the game boy color.

My oldest is GBA. Yes, it's kinda sad that my first handheld system was a GBA in christmas of 2001.

i have somewhere a game gear i still think from memory that the graphics on them hold up pretty well compared to nintendo handhelds uptil the ds range.
