Haha, it took me awhile, but yeah, I beat it! I didn't think anything could top the sense of pride and accomplishment I felt that day...hahaha! But yeah, it was my favorite game from the Mario Bros. series back in the day. Man, that game is awesome. Go Tanuki Suit! I always thought the first Super Mario Bros. was hard...I dunno why...I guess it was just all those Hammer Bros. and Bullet Bills in World 8-something...

I sometimes get lost in the Pipe Maze levels, but other than that, I still have no problem beating it. This game came out when I was in second grade, and I spent literally dozens of hours mastering all the secrets back then.

There are videos on YouTube of people beating this game in less than 11 (or 12) minutes. Personally I cannot go much farther than the first level of that last world.

That video is not real. Emulation throws the authenticity of any speed run into doubt. Videos produced by an emulator can be manipulated in any number of ways and still appear legitimate. The guy who made the infamous 11-minute Super Mario Bros. 3 time attack had originally set out to demonstrate this. When watching the video, it is nearly impossible to tell that the player was relying on the careful use of save states and glitches. He has also admitted to assembling the video from footage taken in several different game-play sessions to create the look of a perfect game. As the video was circulated all over the web, the player's original intention was lost, and as a result, many people mistakenly believe that this is a legitimate speed run or that the player is a fraud. If you're curious about real speed runs and challenge runs, check out Twin Galaxies, an organization that has been verifying video game achievements since 1981. Here you can find out who holds the record for just about every game out there. Twin Galaxies does not consider a session played on an emulator to be a legitimate speed run. Instead, they give certain conditions that must be met. (For example, difficulty, when the timer starts and stops, etc.) A player must play on the actual console and submit a video tape of his session. The tape is reviewed, and if it is deemed legitimate, the record is added to the official Twin Galaxies database.According to Twin Galaxies, the fastest minimalist completion of Super Mario Bros. 3 is 11 minutes and 15 seconds. This was done on a console with no tricks or cheats. The fastest full completion of Super Mario Bros. 3 (beating ALL levels and fortresses) is 1 hour and 37 minutes.

I never finished the NES version of SMB3 because I never owned it in the first place. I have beaten SMB3 on the SNES and GBA. They were easy to beat because you could save in that game.

I think my shortest time beating this game (w/flutes) was something like 1/2 hr or so, it's a really easy game

I found SMB3 is very hard for the NES. On the SNES as a part of All stars, it gets somewhat easier by the fact you can save your progress.I bet it abusing emulator savestates, but I really doubt I could get pass world 4 or so without the aid of savestates.

I remember when SMB3 was new, we rented it out for several weeks at a time... I, as a kid, was awakened one night by a bunch of screaming, cheering adults... My uncle Jon had just beaten the Desert Fortress. That fortress was the bane of my family's existence for several days. Everybody was thrilled to finally get past it. Then they were all horrified once they got to the stage where the sun chases you around. Us kids barely even got a chance to play the game during the time. On topic, yes. I was the second or third one in the family to beat it, and the first to beat it without whistles. I know that game better than I know the back of my hand. I really need to get some noticeable scars.
