I tend to keep the names that were already set if there were any. But if not, I usually name the charecters after my friends and I.

If it's a male and the main character, usually my own name. Then I use the names of people I know who I think the character resembles most.

mike, or mikesg6, I try and name it by my alias or one of my friends.If its a friend I usually choose frank, eric, testoutlol. if its a pet... spike, neko (usually when naming cats).

If they have their own name i wouldn't changed it for walkthrough purposes but if you'll be the one to give them names I always name them Valexor, Weatherlight, Frostmourne and Greven-Il Vec

Usually Link or Crono, as for female characters, I choose a default name.

first time around, i always use the presetsif its a good enough game that it deserves a second play through, i usually name them after people i know since i know the characters already (usually the main bad guy is whomever i hate at the moment)if its THAT good that i play it more than twice (i.e. chronotrigger) then nicknames, favorites, etc. right now im on my 31st playthrough of chronotrigger and so im using real names Frog is named Glenn, Robo is whatever his serial number was (i forget), Marle is Nadia, etc.
