It depents on many things. For exaple if you are playing a D&D game then you will have to rise specific atats because it will be very difficult later with balanced stats exaple: You have a Druid (my favurite) if you don't rise his /hers wisdom then you will not be able to use the most powerful magic later and the stats that you are given have a limit. On the other hand when I'm playing an MMORPG then I rise the stats that my character is weak at (of course without forgeting my most important ones) so I will be able to surprise my enemy :)I always prefer the balanced stats but only when I can.Do you guys prefer to have a balanced team in terms of stats or 1 super strong character with all the stat enhancing items all pumped into this 1 character?

He saw the Mountain silent rise
where twilight lies upon the knees
of Valinor, and Eldamar
beheld afar beyond the seas.
