My favorite game for a while was Warcraft III TFT, and I played for LONG periods of time. Eventually, small scratches started appearing in the disk, but it still ran fine. Those scratches started to get bigger and bigger, yet it would still work.OMG, That's the exact same thing that happened to me! One day, I was just playing along, and I hear this crack. I open the drive, and I see only 20% of the disc in the drive. I was horrified!

Yeah. This exactly why it's never wise to use damaged/cracked discs in your drive as stuff like that may happen (little did wiredbomb0 know that those "scratches" were really cracks). I remember reading up on a type of disc that was notorious for doing that (Sony CDQ 74CN maybe). You also have to remember that these discs are spinning extremely fast in there which puts a lot of heat and pressure on the disc's platter.I came pretty close to this happening to me only I was prepared for it. I basically needed to backup a disc that I knew wouldn't last long. What had happened is that it got stuck in one of my cd cases one of the layers came right off when I tried to get it out so all that was left was the front protective, data, ink, and the reflective layers. This was enough for the disc to work but it was obviously VERY unstable (and noisy too). Fortunately by running it at 1x speed read, I could get the data off but had I continued to use it, I knew all too well what would happen.btw, this might have been posted somewhere before, but do watch this if you haven't already: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=v0QT4Y1Y3ug

And THAT is why disk drives are in an enclosure, and not opened up. I'm glad I only have an x16 burner, because the speeds are fairly slow (about 6k RPM give or take) and will likely not warp a disk enough to fragment it into pieces.

If you want to explode a cd put it on a power tool with a high speed rotation, if the speed goes high enough the cd will actually fly apart even without cracks.POINTS were deducted for this post by Bad Idea BearPlease refer to the forum rules to find out why your points were deducted.

One time I had a CD that I didn't like at all. I threw it against the wall and got a bunch of cracks in it. The next time I put it in the CD player, it exploded and shards flew everywhere. I got one stuck in my arm and it hurt.POINTS were deducted for this post by Bad Idea BearPlease refer to the forum rules to find out why your points were deducted.

I haven't had one explode personally, but at a friends house we were playing some starcraft and then randomly mid game there was this weird whizzing noise and then his computer randomly started to try and eject the cd, but it was jammed. We opened it up the next morning to find just about 20 small pieces of the cd.

My cd reader actully caught on fire when a cd was in there. The cd was melted and the cd drive was totally burnt out.And i have had a cd break when it was in there. It was one of them real small cd's.And another time the cd melted and got stuck in the tray. And last i had a floppy disk get all destroyed when i put in a old floppy drive i connected to the computer. (I had salvaged the floppy drive from a OLD computer. Was a pre 95 computer that i salvaged the thing from.)Also had my power supply catch on fire once.

That happened to me twice. Once with an old disk, and once with a disk I just placed wrong. Those were good games, too...

That is AWESOME! Kamikaze CD!! Except, i'm sorry for your loss of WC III.But check this out science kids... I had a friend who swore this worked. I've never tried it but...You need a power drill, safety goggles, and a cd you don't care about. What you do is put the cd on the drill bit, get it secure, and put on your glasses. Now start spinning that. Faster. Faster. As fast as it will go.If you get it around 2000 RPM (I think that's how fast it takes) That cd is going to seriously EXPLODE!!!this is because cd ROMS are a thin sheet of filament surrounded by a plastic case. When the spinning gets beginningthe part that contains the data starts warping and moves towards the edges of the plastic case. Before you know it, there's too much pressure for the plastic case to contain and BAM!!EXPLOSION!!!

Really? wow i never thought such things could happen. I hope the DVDs and the new Bluray discs would never 'explode' even when it is used for 10 years. But still its still freaky how it can shatter in so much pieces just because its been used a fair bit. Maybe 'explode' isnt the best way to describe it.

Once, I had a CD for a project. I had to help a friend carry a microwave in from the kitchen for something, and I just put the CD in. I forgot to put the CD back out, and when they turned on the microwave, my project cracked and exploded into several pieces.
