yeah i have seen cd shattering to pieces in a pc cd drive. i work on computer service repairs and i have seen a lot. a few times a customer would come in with their computer and exclaim their cd wouldn't come back out. i just remove the drive, and tweak out the drawer and lots of tiny piece would tumble out. all i could do was to replace the drive, as the shattering damages the whole drive (the lens, the eject function)why it happens, i really have no idea about. bad quality of the disc perhaps, and it spins too fast in the player, the vibrations causing it to shatter and break.

Given the OP description, I'm guessing whats happened is he has a 52X CD-ROM drive (Or come other hi-speed drive, maybe 46X)Hi speed drives often have the side effect of making the disc extremely warm from having intense laser light passed over it so much more than in a slower drive. What may have happened is that through extended use the CD has been heated and expanded, then cooled, repeatedly, making the disc develop hairline fractures and crazing because of it. For whatever reason, maybe random chance and maybe through the cracks being perfectly vertical for whatever reason, the disc has kept working because the crazing hasn't disrupted the path of the laser.Eventually, the hairline cracks are just too much, it heats up and expands for he last time (widening the cracks as it does so and robbing the CD of structural integrity. The spinning of the disc in such a high speed drive is just too much for the weakened disc to take, and so it shatters.

A kid I know claimed that his CD drive shot out a CD like a frisbee when it was spinning at 200x. He may have been exaggerating about the speed...although knowing him, he probably could have made it spin at 200x.No explosions there, but I'm pretty sure he was cutting it close.I don't keep a lot of CDs around, instead I rip CD images with Isobuster and mount them to a virtual drive with Daemon Tools.

OMG! I totally forgot about this until seeing this topic title... XDA few years back, I was listening to a music CD on my computer IIRC, all of a sudden I hear this loud bang come from my computer at my feet...I didn't know WTF.. XDI'd heard of CDs exploding but I didn't think they LITERALLY exploded, I was scared to touch the computer...The shrapnel completely destroyed my CD-ROM drive, couldn't even get it open to get the pieces out... XD

CDs don't explode on impact especially if you dropped a CD or scratch the CD. That would seemingly call that the CD is broken.

I've never seen or heard of a CD spontaneously exploding. But I have seen one explode after my freind bent it in half. I shot one into a begillion pieces with a BB gun once. That's almost an explosion.I've seen one melt in a bonfire once, that was pretty cool.

one of my final fantasy 11 install cd's exploded in my dvd-r drive. in over 10 years of regular pc usage it is the first and only cd to ever explode on me. I was shocked, and on top of that it ruined a $200 dvd burner as well.
