CD's are exploding because the drives are exceeding the structural limitations of the disc...yeah i watch Mythbusters, and they did this experiment where they got CD's spinning really fast and they just...shattered...in an instant...

Wow, I'm astonished that this topic lasted so long!Well, the copy of war3 I had was a OEM retail copy, not a cheap backup or anything. Also, I used it in a crappy computer my school gave me for the year, so I'm pretty sure the drive was either 16x or 32x, which seems pretty low too.Lol, I didn't know they had a mythbusters episode of this stuff until I read this topic again.

Yea, I've seen the mythbusters do this one (like you said). My favorite disk was the one they microwaved (it looked cool!)

CDs don't explode on impact especially if you dropped a CD or scratch the CD. That would seemingly call that the CD is broken.

Well, I was once watching anime directly from CDs for hours long, I'd say maybe 10 hours of almost straight CD-Rom spinning to buffer my videos. And then, on that last disc, I just put it in, started to play the disc and i hear a loud explosion that scared me to death (I mean come on, I was in my room alone in the dark at like 2am)I press eject on my drive, it only opened at half, and spit out parts of the shiny label where the data was out of the drive, along with shunks of plastic that was stuck in it.I basically returned the drive to the store saying: Your drive got my cd to explode in it. I want a replacement for the drive and the media it chewed up.So, once I was back home, I had a new cd-rom along with a pack of 5 cds in compensation.

your disk probably started getting scratches and cracks from the heat becasue u say you play it for a long time right? =D and eventually the heat expanded the cracks and scratches and it broke apart...you know how you put a cd in a microwave...well tat probably happened to your disk sooo its very explainable

Well, the disc I put in didn't have any scratches on it, although the plastic which the disc was made of felt different from the others I had.And ya, practically as hot as a microwave, since the previous disc I ejected before inserting the one that exploded was burning hot to the point of just putting your whole palm onto the surface of the disc heats up a little too much for comfort.

Its not very common however using CDs for an extended period of time can weaken them. I had my FFXI disc one explode in the middle of install... All I heard was "crash" then it stopped reading and I ejected it. I ended up replacing my CD and the CD Drive. Ah the memories.

Don't know if this was said in the past 12 pages, I'm not feeling up to reading every one of them, =P.But, what kind of CD-ROM drive was it? One where you snap it into the drive, and it spins from there? If so, there could have been dirt on the disk or the tray and as it spins it scratches it and eventually the heat, if prolonged, would have expanded the disk and it's possible that it would randomly break. If it was just a drop in the tray kind of drive, there may have been a piece of debris on the lens sticking up which could have scratched the disk as it made its rounds.

Something similar happened to me, LOL. I was playing StarCraft: Broodwar so much that the hole at the center of the CD cracked a bit. The next time I played, I heard a "pop" in the CD Drive (the game was still running normally BTW). So, I exit the game, opened the drive and saw a huge crack line running from the hole to nearly the outer edge. Of course, I tried to put it back in and played it, but it did not work. I ended up downloading an image of the broodwar CD to play (Using my own CD-Key though...DUH).

My favorite game for a while was Warcraft III TFT, and I played for LONG periods of time. Eventually, small scratches started appearing in the disk, but it still ran fine. Those scratches started to get bigger and bigger, yet it would still work. Eventually, one day I started playing, any put my beat-up copy of TFT into the drive and loaded it up, but then there was this odd sound of something jamming coming from the comp. I opened up the drive, and found my game had shattered into about 10-12 pieces.I spent a good hour fishing the pieces out that had lodged themselves into the back and sides of the drive. What I think happened was that the scratches finally broke through the other side, making hairline cracks in the disc, and the next time I put it in, the high speed of the drive spinning the disc caused the disc to break and fly apart, of balancing it and causing mor damage to the disc, causing more pieces to break apart.Has this every happened to you? If so, what CD?

No ways! Actually I think it is rare For something like this to happen! Wow Guiness world record! Jokes dude! Try to get more info on how this happene, I will see what i can do to. Write ya lator!

For a drive to break a CD, the CD must have some pre-made scratches, all the drive does is spin the disc at high speeds, while the drive spins the disc at those high speeds, it takes the pre-made scratches and makes them bigger, if you have a CD that has never been scratched, it won't break, but if it has scratches, it has a higher chance to break apart, I have a case to drive/drive to case rule, no detours, and when I am frantically looking for the case and people tell me to lay it on a table or something, I stare at them for a minute, then I say "No way am I doing something stupid like that", I have a thing that every disc I own has to be as clean and shiny as a mirror, not a single scratch, I don't even trust CD sleeves
