honestly, i think that both are essential, without one, the game would be hardpressed to make it bighowever, if i had to choose, it will be for the story

Focusing on just RPG's, I would have to say that while a mixture is important, the story beats out the graphics. Although I have to say this, good games will normally do one or the other pretty well, if not exceptionally well, great games can do both, and keep you coming back for more.

Mostly storyline for me, but I can't play a game that is completely ugly or stupid looking.

the story line should be good so that you could replay the game and never get tiredugly graphics doesnt really matter its like a mere shell to the ghost of the game which is btw story and gameplaygood graphics make for good screenshots and trailer while a good story line is joy forever

Story. All the way.I'd rather play a game that makes my eyes bleed but has an amazing story than a game with crappy story but realistic graphics. You know.

personally, I need both, because if the game has neat graphics, then it'll be more plesent to play in it, but if its boring, its still no good, is it? thats why its both,

A mixture of both would be nice, but I suppose an engrossing story trumps all.

You need both if you really want to succeed, but I still lean a little towards story.

Yeah, i also think that a mixture of both makes a great game, and probably you won't sell much if ya dont do it like this, but personally i really just care about the story... I played lunar on ps!!! And that was pretty an awful looking game, but it justhad that feel about the characters... Anyways, i also think there is something else to consider besides the story, which is how fun the battles/strategies/whatever you really have to do to finish the game is. A good exemple wouldbe xenosaga II for ps2, it surely has a very nice story, but it only has 2 dungeons, and it gets very very boring...

If you are all graphics and no story you turn into a crappy game like Morrowind

for me a mixture is the best. good graphics are needed to catch my attention as a gamer (because if graphics are crappy i don't play) , but EXCELLENT storylines are needed to keep me playing through them. most of the games that I remember very well are those with great storylines... those with great graphics are only secondary... XD

I'm going with story, games with great stories existed before great graphics, but as someone mentioned before gameplay and overall fun factor decides the game. Take Meteos, silly story (but passable), great gameplay, and average graphics, but it resulted in a phenomenal game.

It's definitely a balance issue. You have to get a game that has good enough graphics to properly display what needs to be seen, and a well-enough crafted story that you can comprehend and be engaged by it.There isn't any real winner in my opinion.
