Tho every game gets better and better graphics it doesn't matter, as long as it has a great story i wouldn't mind SNES graphics

I choose story, even if Suikoden or any old school RPG has bad gfx, the story always makes the game good.

What's the meaning of great graphics without an excellent story?

Storyline defines the game. Heck, look at Dragon Quest VIII. It has graphics that some N64 games would rival, and yet is one of the better PS2 games simply because the characters are fun and it has a good storyline.

Grafix in a game are great to have but if there is no story to back up the game to give it depth and to help us understand whats going on and why things are happening then it doesn't really matter how good the grafix are. i believe that the story behind the game is the most inportant thing there is or at least one of the most important, the grafix is not as important but its still good to have. I also believe that the story makes all the diffrence in a game and how good it is and will be.

I believe is takes a balance of both to make a game good. It will be best if both are present in a games

Story first IMO.look at the old snes RPG's such as Chrono Trigger, and the old final fantasys.the grphics on those arent anything spectacular, and yet i still enjoy playing those games now.graphics dont make the game, clever story writing and interesting characters do.

Story, no contest.I mean, Grandia 2 looked like ****, but I loved it anyways (even if the story was a little cliche)

Mixture is great because both are essential. But if i had to chose i would pick story because it's what makes it fun

They're both important but I think the story is vital to an RPG. Just look at what happened with FF XII, amazing graphics but the story pretty much sucked, so I lost interest in the game pretty fast.

For a great Rpg I say you need a good story and some decent graphics. Would you seriously play a game with an intense story and then boom, then you couldn't tell the difference between a dog and a tree.

Story is the most important. Which is why I still play older games. However good graphics don't hurt. Also, gameplay is probably on par with story...

First of all story is more important but i just wanted to respond to what you said by saying that the story doesnt suck for ffxii, its just squarenix didnt do a good job with character development.

First, I ask people to keep this sort of civil. I know that when there are debates about subjects with people that feel their side is correct or "better" than another side, they get hotheaded when someone else questions it. I ask that no one attacks or anything like that in this thread -- I have no problem asking someone to lock or delete this thread, even if it comes as a warning against myself. >.>Now, I pose the question; when choosing a RPG, do you look into the storyline for the game or wind up picking it because of the graphics that you see?I've been up on the fence on this lately. Sometimes, I get a game based on the graphics of it and other times I get one based on the story that it gives. I tend to like RPGs based more on their story telling ability, but lately, it seems that RPGs are trying to get to be more graphic based. I was just wondering what everyone else thought about what would make a better RPG.

while a the story is what keeps me in the game, i cant stand having horrible graphics. next-gen graphics arent necessary, but the help, and sotrylines such as ffx, or ffxii, well, gamse with storylines dont even need good graphics, they're just that awesome.

Well,,I really like Shadow of the colossus, and that was very skimpy on story, and had great graphicsbut i bet I would have loved it more if there was a better story.

I would have to say - they complement each other. Good graphics and bad storyline makes a bad game. Bad graphics and good storyline make an average game( I support story more than graphics)But good story and good graphics is the BEST! As far as the game's an RPG, story beats graphics

I do like to have good grphics and a good story, but in rpg's I also like to have good gameplay, and a high level of custumization.

If the story sucks then the game sucks, and that's the end of that discusion. That's what makes the game worth playing. Like Shadow of the Colossus. It had a very simple straight forward story. Boy risks all to save girlfreind or sister or whoever she is.Pretty simple but the gameplay is electrifying. There are so many " Holy Crap!" moments when you meet the most of the Colossai for the first time. But when it comes down to RPG's the story is what makes you want to play.

You need a mixture of graphics and story because if you add too much to graphics or story and leave the other behind, then the whole balance of the game wouldn't be a playable game at all.
