I think that for a good RPG game, you need both. Unless it's one on a handheld such as the Nintendo DS. That is a different story.

Gameplay, funfactor, and music are the three most important parts of a game for me. Graphics absolutely help, and storyline helps too, though if those first three don't exist in the core of the game, the game is of little value to me.

Games are about fun. That's their main purpose. Both story and graphics enhance the fun of a game. In the old days, graphics were not as advanced as now, and games were more story and gameplay-driven than graphics. However, with current technology, graphics enhance gameplay and story. Good character models make them more believable, well-done environments leave a lasting impression on the gamer, special effects and smooth frame-rate increase the realism and excitement of the experience. Therefore, graphics and story are equalliy important in a game, and must each be considered.

You need both but in the end I the story swings the balance for me. Like with Final Fantasy, my first FF was 8 so to me the older ones don't look good. But the stories and gameplay are still good. So I'll still play them.

For rpgs it's story haands down, i mean some of the classics in 2d i still happily play today like Zelda a lnk to the past, but for fps and other genres graphics tend to be more important as it's more geared towards mindless fun than deep involving game play.

i think story is the most important, but graphics can really help with that. like in the old 32-bit days, it was common to have an emote bubble since you couldn't actually tell the persons facial expression that much. in a way, its better than the ps1 games, which lacked emotes and graphics(barring cutscenes) to show the characters feelings. also, it could be rather difficult to tell if there was ay, a button to be pushed or a paper to read or an item to get that wasn't in a chest or comething.

well... the story does a lot for it; but, lets be honest.. sometimes, the graphics really do take away from the playability. if theyre terrible, it's just such a pull down for the game. but, great graphics with a cheap story just makes for like, 30 minutes of play. so, both.

Well it has to be story. Why can people read books? It has no graphics at all. Because the story is quite good. Sure graphics make everything less chunky and stuff. But disjointed ideas just make you say "What the hell?" everytime a cutscreen appears and so forth.

Well nowadays most games are all about graphics and they have horrible gameplay (if they have any real gameplay at all).I could care less as long as decent enough to look at.

i'ld have to go for story cause i played FF6 after FFX and i was still as enthralled with it as i was with FFX despite the graphics were no were near as good (mainly cause its a gameboy game not on ps2).

graphics are nice but they're ultimately more like perks. the story is what really keeps me engaged and interested.

I think both graphics and story are needed to make a great rpg, though for me the story is far more important... if the game has ok graphics and the story is really good I think it's worth playing it. =)

i think that blind is right, FFX has good graphics and story an did made sucess and i prefer both. i dont want to play a rpg game that is great in graphics but sucks in story its, in a way STALKER, you want great graphics to go witht he awsome lighting

Well, I think that if the graphics are too bad, you don't even pay attencion to the story, and if the story isn't interesting, doesn't matter how good the graphics are. I think a bit of both is important.

a good rpg should have nice graphics to appeal to the audience. however it also needs a good storyline to keep the player entertained. so both play an important factor.i believe that graphics are the initial attraction to the buyer though.

Definitely has to be an even mixture. If a game has a great story, but a big turd to look at, I'm not going to keep playing it for long... If it looks awesome, but the story is a turd, again, not gonna do it... However, if you have a great balanace (ANY Final Fantasy game), you'll never get me to drop the controller.
