I have no doubt that graphics play a major role in the quality of the game, but they just add. The story is what makes you want to play the game, to find out what's next.

Well there are no graphics in a good book besides the occasional illustration and it's never bothered me before. Graphics are nothing compared to a well fleshed out storyline.

Like someone already said, a mix of both with an emphasis on story makes the best game. I, personally, can deal with any 16-bit or better graphics, so I'd rather that someone made an 80-hour game with a lot of story than a 10-hour game with insane graphics. For example, I find myself playing one of the GBA Final Fantasy's over Champion's of Norrath: Realms of Everquest (for the PS2), even though the latter has much better graphics.

In my eyes a video game is all about an exciting story. Look at Mario or Zelda (back in the 8bit era) those games had terrible graphics but zgreat storylines and look how successful they are.

Story all the way! RPG's are story-based anyways, that's one of the definitions of the genre.Put it this way: Take an RPG, and remove the story except for the bare minimum plot details. It's not really an RPG anymore is it?Now take that same RPG, reload the story but remove the graphics. Heck, make it a text-based RPG. Isn't it still a role playing game?

Graphics are nice and they can add a lot to an RPG, however for an RPG to be a good RPG it needs a good story. Out of all the Final Fantasies, VI is still my favorite. The graphics dont come anywhere close to VII or any of the ones after it, but the story kept me in the whole game.

To me the story/gameplay or whatsoever is far, far more important than the graphics. By saying this I don't think graphics are 'not' important, they're just a secondary fact.

Graphics make you drool every now and then but its so much easier to get into a game if the story is intriguing (spelling?)

give me a story that rivals Chrono Trigger, as well as a good fast moving fighting system like Chrono Cross.... Hopefully Blue dragon delivers.

i say story hands down. my favorite games were seiken densetsu 3, FFVI, and the SNES Chronotrigger (the OG one). a game is worthless if its all flash

It really depends on the type of game you're playing ... but gameplay and story beat graphics hands-down everytime! O_O

Gameplay, the nature of the interaction within the game is ultimately the most important factor. Sure clean graphics can make a difference, but I'd rather have an immersive, entertaining game anyday than one that looks great but is dull and unengaging. The story or narrative element is often helpful but it should be emergent, the inevitable result of great gameplay. The story need not be extensive, it only serves the gameplay. If a dramatic game narrative is relevant to furthering gameplay, then it should emerge from the context of the environment and the rules.

Story is more important than graphics because graphics to me is just for eye candy. Of course I don't want a game with atari graphics but I want something that pulls me into the game and makes me want to know more of the story. Also gameplay is a key factor in games because something monotonous and dull won't get alot of people to play.

I really don't see how anyone can legitimately say that graphics make up for crappy gameplay, story, music, etc etc etc.Or any other variation of the argument.
