It is called a Bongo (or Tribubble Bongo). They were built by the Otoh Gunga Bongameken Cooperative, and each submarine was designed uniquely. There were also many variants including those that could carry more people (heyblibbers), military and scout versions, and cargo versions. The first to die was Jek Porkins, who was Red Six during the battle. Two X-wings blew up a tower and the explosion messed up some of his X-Wing's instruments, so he couldn't fly it as well and was killed by the turbolaser towers. Biggs died much later when it was just him, Wedge, and Luke making the final trench run (Wedge got damaged and was forced to pull out).
