My parents feels that I shouldn't let my children watch The Simpsons because they say it's detrimental to their mental development. Can anyone come up with a good argument against that?

I don't know what kind of argument you could give. It's going to be hard to prove the Simpsons are in fact good for their mental development. Obviously reading would be better for them, but you can't really expect them to read all day every day. I watch the Simpsons with my daughter, and she's one of the top kids in her class (she's 9 by the way.)

Actually Spmpsons is also a learning program at the same time. It actually have morals in it too, they just teach you in a simple, stupid and funny way. x)

Well, I would let them watch when they are at least 10 yrs old and I can control them a little better. I wouldn't want them to her innapproperate language until I told them about it. Yes, kids can watch it only when they are old enough to understand what is going on in the world a little better.

It's not a bad show if you understand that it is meant to be a satire on american life, but if kids don't understand that, they might simply emulate the behaviour they see on tv.

if anything the simpsons would have a positive effect on children, the shows are chock-full of storybook-esque morals.

I don't see a problem with kids watching it. There are so many things included in the Simpsons that are about history, you can always ask your children to look for an event that is historical.

wow, i REALLY think the simpsons are quite educational ... they just teach you stuff in a funny way... i do not think its really inapropiate for children because most children cant even understand what they mean! They do not use bad words do they? Dont think so.

I've actually learnt lots from Simpsons. Like lots of vocabulary words and morals that are included in the show. I believe that Simpsons doesn't influence violence or crimes, because there are heaps of games that enforce that. My brothers play a lot of shooting and fighting games and stuff, and don't watch Simpsons too often, so I think it because of that.

I dont think small children should watch it, i think it the show is more meant for adults. They could watch it after the age of 12. Its educational after u can fully understand whats going on. I agree with ebb.

This show is not suitable for young children maybe when their older like 10+ so that they would have a better understanding of what is right or wrong. Kids nowadays tend to pick up on the things they see on tv or around them, so don't be surprised if they suddenly talk back to you in a manner unappropriate for their age or worse...

I was a kid when Simpsons came out and I've watched it since then and I'm perfectly fine. It is inappropriate at times, but for the most part, its fine.

I really dont see any problem with the simpsons just as long as your kids are getting enough sleep and getting all of there homework done. I am a hardcore believer that television does not shape your mind because there is something that I like to call free will. People can blame things on everything else but I believe people should just take things for what they are. If your kids know the difference between right and wrong then I think they should be able to watch the simpsons. If your really scared to let them watch it sit with them and watch it for a few days and tell them well son or daughter this is wrong and you shouldnt be doing it. Maybe that will work

I think it *is* inappropriate. Every funny TV show is inappropriate. My one friend talks only about TV and it's annoying since I don't watch TV. It sounds like "Did you see that one episode of Simpsons when >Insert something funny or rather lame here<" It's so annoying. I don't think he has a life.

Well thats only like 1 in every 5 episodes. I dont think the kids should be whacthing much televsion over all. They should be reading or something, although I think reading dulls character.

I myself enjoy it, but I would never ever show it to a baby sister, or brother. It's just plain bad. It's worse enough I've already been diagnostic with a positive on inappropriate-ness I would not want someone younger then me to also be a positive.

I don't think Simpsons is inappropriate for kids..Family Guy is though. The Simpsons is just there for typical humor.
