For small children I wouldn't recommend it, with the Itchy and Scratchy and the crude humor, kids might get some "bad" ideas...but meh, it's not stuff they don't/won't understand later on anyway.

The Simpsons did begin as an adult cartoon. Some of the jokes can be mature in nature but overall their for everyone.

I believe some themes of the Simpsons are not meant for kids. Drinking and hitting others and all that. It is ok for kids to watch some episodes since some of them do teach moral lessons (in a strange way that may not be emulated in real life) as long as there is parental guidance while watching.

I don't know what kind of argument you could give. It's going to be hard to prove the Simpsons are in fact good for their mental development. Obviously reading would be better for them, but you can't really expect them to read all day every day. I watch the Simpsons with my daughter, and she's one of the top kids in her class (she's 9 by the way.)

qUITE HONESTL;Y, MOST SHOWS AREN;T THAT innaporopriate, sum can cross the line but most are fine. Imean there not weducational but there funny so I would let your kids watch some of the good episodes

i personaly say its your choice overall so dont stress over it. simpsons are just a show for entertainment purposes overall, those whom say its harmfull to education are either too oconservative, or let there kids watch it excessivly.

Quite frankly, anything can happen in the Simpsons. I think it is more appropriate for teens/adults but shows like this often have multiple/different writers who can take completely different directions. So yeah, some eps are more appropriate than others, like the ones with moral lessons. I have to admit though, Family Guy seems way worse to me in it's crudeness. Add "dirty topics" refererences to the mix and it's like 97% of the time. Futurama is just a little bit tamer to Family Guy but not by much. There is always references to porn. Ugh. You can tell the writers are only men in these shows.

The Simpsons is minor stuff! It's rated PG (ages 8 and up)I think a lot of parents only want kids to be exposed to a teletubby land where hello kitty, and dancing bears are everywhere

Classic Simpsons episodes should be required viewing for children. Its the only way to save our corrupt society.

kids should be able to watch simpsons because most of the mature topics can't be understood by little kids.

I've been watching the simpsons since I was 2 and I am extremely smart, even if the simpsons doesn't increase your intelligence I am certain that it does not erode as a result of watching it...

I can't really say as I've never really watched the show for the same reason you stated. I was never allowed to watch The Simpsons in addition to Rugrats when I was younger because my mother thought they were inappropriate and I still haven't ever watched them. I was fine with not watching them though.

Well, I would say it swears, and has rude jokes, so I would say not to let kids 8- watch.
