The first thing that happens is that Sora arrives at Hallow Bastion he sees beast and Riku fighting and they intervene.. after a long arguement Riku takes Sora's keyblade and gives him a wooden sword and Beast is now available to put in your party.

IIRC, later in the story you get it back automaticly, right before you fight Riku.

The type of heartless that he is turned into is the shadow heartless.Bonus:I think you mean how does he revert back to his original self?Sora reverts back by hugging Kiari. Kiari knows that it is Sora inside the heartless. The love of Kiari turns him back.
