Rather than runing out of ideas, I think they are trying to improve on the current games they have.

It really depends on the genre. For RPGs, for example, I think so, as every story these days is a rehash of the old SNES and PS1 ones with better characters, better scripts, and often better scenarios. It also depends on the game. After I got hooked on the MGS series, every first-person shooter I played after that seemed rather lame. So I guess it's just a mix between the two. Every once in a while though, a game pops out that nobody expected and pleases just about everyone who plays it. I guess for me, I lean more towards gameplay.
