Ok I couldn't find any threads about this so I decided to ask, myself...I've been a fan of Metroid since I first played it on NES when I was a little boy...I thought Metroid II (along with Zelda IV) was the best Gameboy game (even though it's a bit antiquated these days)...Super Metroid III is one of the best games EVER...and Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission have perfectly and elegantly carried on the Metroid series on GBA...But Metroid Prime came along and for the first time ever I had really mixed feelings about it...Sure, it looked gorgeous and had some really cool effects...But the decision to convert it to an FPS never sat well with me...after playing it a bit I knew that I just didn't care for it...I found it tedious (with all the scanning), I found it slow-paced (despite some intense shoot-outs)...And most of all, it didn't FEEL like a Metroid game to me...I got Metroid Prime Hunters for DS hoping it would be better, but everything I didn't like about Prime was actually WORSE on Hunters...And the stylus controls are just indescribably akward...I didn't play it very long before I found myself popping in Fusion again and happily playing through that for about the billionth time...I just don't feel Metroid transitioned into 3D well at all...It might be a different story if it was 3rd-person but to make it an FPS took away alot of what made Metroid cool to me...The problem is, it seems to have been pretty well recieved by most people and I'm afraid there won't be anymore 2D Metroids...I don't have to worry about Castlevania because NONE of the 3D incarnations of it have done very well so they'll keep making 2D ones (at least for handhelds) because they know they'll sell...But Metroid is a different case...I really hope we haven't seen the last 2D Metroid...Since I know most of you DO like the 3D Metroids, I'd like to hear your opinions of them versus the 2D ones...If you like them better, or worse, or about the same...

Very nice topic...I voted 2D Metroid, even though we're in a 3D gaming generation. Games like Metroid should continue their legacy in 2D, but I doubt they'll be making anymore 2D Metroids. They'll probably a 3D one for the Wii or Xbox 360.

3d Metroids are alot better to me more exploration and more angles to shoot shooting games belong in a 3d world but one game (kind off topic) that should have never gone 3d was Megaman

I've loved the later 2D Metroids, didn't care much care for the first two since the first one hasn't aged well, and the second one...I just never really got into it. That being said, I really didn't like Metroid Prime Hunters, sure the controls were easy and the action was good, but the escapes from every single planet...twice, and the really unoriginal bosses seriously burned me away from the game.

I'm not a fan of the 3D Metroid games. It is just too difficult for me to move around and watch where I'm going with the stylus.Maybe if it were placed on a PC format (I'm used to Halo on PC, therefore I'd be good at playing Metroid with a mouse.), I could play it 3D.

Hehe, oddly enough I really LIKED Mega Man Legends...

didn't care much care for the first two since the first one hasn't aged well

I have to say I really dissagree with that...I think the first Metroid has actually aged VERY well...Even by today's standards it has really good play control and it's still fun exploring around the vast world that was present way back then...Sure the graphics aren't as good but back in Nintendo's early days, they concentrated far more on gameplay because graphics were so limited...As a result games like Metroid and Zelda are still incredibly fun today, despite being a bit technically behind...It really wasn't until the first Metroid was remade as Zero Mission that I found myself not wanting to play it as much...Zero Mission was just so awesome and such a good remake that it's kinda hard to choose the original over it...But I DO still play the original...I can pretty much beat it with my eyes closed...Now Metroid II, I don't think has aged well...It was a realy cool game back when it came out, providing a lot of new elements to an already great game...It managed to do things a little different but still keep the same appeal...Nowadays though, the gameplay really doesn't stand up...Moving Samus feels like trying to run through tar...

Maybe if it were placed on a PC format (I'm used to Halo on PC, therefore I'd be good at playing Metroid with a mouse.), I could play it 3D.

That's an interesting thought...I think I WOULD like it a bit more if I could play with the mouse and keyboard...Though I still don't really get that "Metroid" feeling from it...You just don't get to run and jump around like the 2D ones...

3D metroids are a lot better especially metroid prime hunters for DS, that was a great game, and metroid prime was really good too

Oh man... I couldn't play five minutes of the 3D Metroid games (especially Hunters, which I thought was a horrible game). the 2D Metroid games, on-the-other-hand, are excellent... I just hope they continue to make them

I don't see any reason they can't just make both...Except that maybe they feel the market isn't split enough to make decent money on both types...But I'm pretty sure whether they make a 2D Metroid or 3D Metroid (or both) people are going to buy it...

I really prefer the 2d ones over the 3d ones, although the new 3d one coming out for Wii next year seems to be promising enough to make me a 3d fan.

Gotta go with the 2D Metroids. While Metroid Prime is perfectly fine, Metroid Prime 2 was anything BUT a good game, and Metroid Prime Hunters suffered from repetitive game play and absolutely horrid controls.I'm still going to get Metroid Prime 3, but I'm skeptical of it. I'd rather Nintendo just go back to mass-producing 2D Metroid games.

I think is like comparing NES and SNES Mario series with the N64 and GC ones, they are different but both of them are pretty good games over all, the same applies with Metroid.

Both 3D and 2D metroid games rock the house, but i find the 2D ones like fusion and zero mission much more enjoyable. Playing Metroid Prime: Hunters just hurts my hand when i have to use the stylus for more than an hour, but that doesnt happen when playing Fusion etc.3d is cool, but go back to 2d for more fun tbh.

I enjoy both, but if I had to choose to play only one or the other I'd go with the 2D.

Metroid Prime 1 and 2 were possibly the best games last generation, they were brilliant. That said, the 2D ones are excellent as well, and Super Metroid is probably the best SNES game ever. Keep the 2D ones coming for handhelds please Nintendo.

It's like in Castlevania series. The 3D games are no bad at all, but he 2D are always better. I prefer a 2D log game with a good story than a awesome 3D graphics game

I like both of em. They are really good games. But i have more fun playing the 2d Ones then the 3d. Both Fusion and Zero mission had a certain feel to it.Like you were part of the game. But in hunters it seemed kinda odd
