Fall back? The DS just saw its third Christmas, and it is still selling out in stores. It's the most popular console in the world. It sold more consoles this Christmas than any other system. In Japan, it sold more than all the other systems combined. Nintendo is completely dominating the handheld market, not to mention the entire video game industry right now.

Yep, Nintendo's back on top with a vengence... Not only is the DS outselling the PSP 5 to 1 in Japan and 3 to 1 in America, but the Wii is the Next-Gen darling of the gaming press... Of course, the fact that they're still moving GBA SPs at a very respectable rate and that their software completely dominates the Japanese top 10 lists has got to feel good too! This is the second "Nintendo's handhelds are going down in popularity" post I've responded to in as many days, and I don't get where these delusional PSP fanboys are coming from, but they obviously have no idea what's going on in the real world - Nintendo are killing everybody in terms of marketshare and respect right now!

Well, remember, it's really only outselling the PS3 and Wii because the supply is not meeting the demand on that. But yea, the DS is kicking the PSP's donkey, so I'm not exactly sure why Nintendo would be considered to be declining... I mean, only the hardcore PSP fans would say that. And really, there is a good argument for the PSP being a better device than the DS, but purely from a gaming standpoint, the DS has better games than the PSP, so it's good to go.

I don't think Nintendo EVER declined in the handheld section. Aren't they considered the leaders after the success of the GB?

I'll bet anyone anywhere a C note that by this time next year, the Wii will have outsold the PS3 by a margine of at least 50%, and that will have nothing to do with availability - more people simply want the Wii in their home, rather than Sony's less-than-inspirational overpriced ubertech. Look at the fall of the PS3 "scalpers" market - there still aren't many PS3s on store shelves, but those that bought PS3s on speculation prior to Christmas can't get rid of them - there are ads all over Craigslist of people trying to sell these things at cost, and they can't move them! The PS3 is going to need a few years and a couple price drops to gain some market share, me thinks... Fortunately for Sony, the PS2 has another year or two of life left in it, and it will help keep their collective heads above water while they pull them out of their asses on the PS3 side of things.

There is more competition from the psp, but it is still doing quite well, especially worldwide.

Well, sure, the PS3 has a ridiculous price tag on it, so the Wii probably will end up outselling it, but I was talking about both of the consoles in relation to the DS; I think that the Wii will certainly outsell the DS in the coming year, and perhaps the PS3 might too if its price drops enough.

Availability is a limited argument though because the DS Lite has been sold out at most stores this Christmas too. Considering it is being manufactured in much higher quantities than the Wii or PS3, that only goes to show how popular it really is.

Absolutley not! because they already offer a varity of consoles (DS/GBA) and because their prices are lower

Not in the UK though, apparently in game shops, on average, half of it is filled with the playstation 2 and psp, one quarter with the xbox 360, one quarter with nintendo stuff (the wii, gba, ds and gc). It's a shame to be honest, but I have to admit, the DS is doing pretty well worldwide.

Well, Nintendo might sell more Wiis than DSs this year, but there's no way Nintendo will sell 30 million Wiis, and that's how many DSs will have been sold worldwide by the end of March, if not sooner... As for the PS3, I'll be shocked - in fact, completely stunned! - if Sony manage to sell 4 Million of the things by Jan. 1, 2008... They can't afford to drop the price this year (they're losing somewhere in the neighbourhood of $300 per console now!), and without a lot of extremely good games, only die-hard gamers are going to be willing to pick them up at that price! I mean, I've owned EVERY console and handheld system released in North America since the Atari 2600 - including the Neo Geo Gold AES, the Atari Jaguar and the TurboExpress, all of which were considered quite expensive in their day - and I'm not willing to pay what Sony wants for a PS3. Sure, in pure hardware terms, they may be worth the asking price (an 8 core Power PC processor? a BluRay drive? gotta be worth somethin'!), but it's the games that make the system, and you'll need a powerful lot of stellar games to justify that kind of cabbage in my (pocket)book...

I know two people who have PSPs. I know one other person who has another old hand held (I forget which). I cannot start to count the number of people I know who own DSs, some who have Gameboys of various generations but no DS (because they're cheap like me), and still quite a good number who own a DS and several GBs. There is no way that Nintendo is loosing the market. gj to Sony for trying, but they're really just making Nintendo competitive and therefore making their systems even better.

I don't think the PSP has taken any marketshare from Nintendo either. The people buying PSPs aren't the same people who buy GBAs or DSs. It's a totally different market Sony is going after, and I don't think it has had much affect at all on Nintendo's sales.
