Personaly I think older games are harder. Newer games don't feel as hard as say the way Gargoyle Quest II or Mega Man III wereThe new Final Fantasy games are pretty hard but not when compared to Final Fantasy two or three for SNESNow of course there are some realy easy NES and SNES games like Duck Tales and Super Mario World. But all in all NES had way harder games than most new games for X-Box and PS2The hardest game I've ever played was the NES game Solstice if you can make out of the first level I tip my hat to you.

Oh there is no question. Old games are definately harder. A lot of them had that 1 hit kills you and you have to start the level over arcade style system. And even though those styles often made me want to break my controlers (and I did sometimes), the rewarding feeling for that perfect run far surpasses what you get from todays games.

Many old games are harder, but it's funny, because many of them didn't have guides, but now the game's guide is practically sold with the game, even though it's too easy for a guide! It's always nice every once in a while now to see a game like Viewtiful Joe or Star Fox Command come out that is really challenging (even if it is just because of the way you control the game with a touch screen 100%), because it lets me keep faith in current game designers.

i think older games were harder because it required some intense hand and eye coordination. also the puzzles were very complex. games these days only focus on graphics and other game mechanics other than the challenge factor.

Older games. Ever heard of the tern old-school? what does it make you think of? Just compare Viewtiful Joe to Ratchet and Clank. There you go. For further convincing, watch some of Angry Nintendo (Video Game) Nerd's video reviews.

So true. In new games, they'll hide some silly trinket or switch somewhere in a level so you have to use a guide to find it and call that difficulty. That isn't difficulty; it's tedium.

Newer games are easier because they have more depth. You have to remember that in the old days most games were a single screen affair with one simple mechanic to learn, and once you learned it the game became very tedious, repetitive and boring. Play Pac Man, Asteroids or Defender to a million points and you'll see what I mean.

In my opinion old games were harder than new games because they were shorter.

Old games are OBVIOUSLY harder, nowadays the target on video games are the graphics instead of difficulty, challenge or replay value, back then when PC engine was still played the target was difficulty and graphics which were pretty cool at the time, the difficulty was unforgiving. Anyways the hardest games (for me) 've ever played were demon's Crest and lords of thunder.

Yea, I think a big reason for all of it is because back in the 80s, they couldn't catch you with eye candy very often. Therefore, they actually had to focus on making the gameplay substantial. However, now that they can sell their game with a good trailer or some awesome screenies, they don't need to work as hard on the other parts of the game.

some new game design to improve the graphic, so it's hard to say new games harder than old ones

Most new games are easier than their ancient counterparts were. Compare Super Mario Brothers to New Super Mario Brothers.

older games were made harder so that you would take longer to beat them and make the experience last longer.

old games are hard even tho the concept is simple... like the first level might be easy but they get hard pretty fast... modern games take longer to get hard so you build up skills more proportionately than old school games... but i still love em classics

Yes, they make it more challenging by making new, hard, and better games than before.

I'm going to definately say the older games are harder. A lot of the newer final fantasy games seem to be a lot easier.. Maybe longer, but not really harder. I remember playing Mega Man and getting my donkey kicked.. Mega Man 1 and 2 weren't incredibly difficult, but not easy, but from there on, hard. Actually, MM or RM as you may call him, isn't a good example I think.. Other than the X series for the super, I think that they are all pretty challenging.. Friggin' Zero for the gba.. ouchies. Oh, I promise that I'm finished after this, Silver "f*&^%n'" Surfer for the NES. That game, hard.

I think new games are Harder then old once because of the new technology is improving graphics wich doesn't make it 2D and makes it harder to contol how ever your playing the games and the actions and skillls are much harder to do

Of course old games are harder. If not because of the fact that they started out mostly as arcade ports (and were thus designed to suck your quarters down), then because the play control just wasn't nearly as well-defined back then. Besides, games today are made to be easier. Just a decade or so ago, only RPGs let you save your games, now it's an industry standard. Why? It's easier, it's more convenient, it lets the games be longer... Back in the days of Space Invaders and Pac-Man, you just needed something you could pump a quarter into and play for a few minutes while waiting for mom. That's not the case anymore. People want to get their money's worth, and they want to be able to beat their games. Therefore, long games, the ability to save. The ability to save is a big dealbreaker, really. That's why "old school" games are so much harder... You couldn't save, you had to restart the game from the beginning EVERY SINGLE TIME you played it.Everybody looks back fondly on the NES and SNES days, and sure, I loved 'em too, but there were a lot of horrible, downright unplayable games made back then. Half the NES library is junk. And they were [I]expensive[I/]. I loved the NES, but I never ever wanna pay $50 for a clunky, unplayable piece of garbage like Bad Street Brawler again.

Old games are harder. Seriously. Play Spy Hunter on a NES Emulator and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Actually if you play the Shin Megami Tensei series of games on the PS2, especially the secret bosses, they are pretty damn hard (i.e. Hito Shura in Digital Devil Saga and Satan in DDS2) and Shin Mega Ten Nocturne was hard cause of the abnormal success rate of the insta kill spells (besides if your hero dies BAM!! instant game over :/)But yes i definitely agree that most older games had a lot more toughness coupled in... Lol the children these days are wimpier or so it would seem O_O

I say old games are harder. The thing that bothered me about new games or ports of old games is that extra lives were much easier to get than in the old games. New Super Mario Bros. and Yoshi's Island DS are two good examples. In NSMB, you had these Toad houses that give you free 1ups. The chances of leaving the house with no 1ups was about 12%. I usually win about 5 to 7 lives very often. Becuase of that, I had 99 lives throughout most of the game. In YIDS, just about all the minigames had opportunities to earn 1ups since there aren't items in this game. I had over 100 lives around the middle of World 2.Also, most of those games (especially the GBA ports) saved the number of lives you had. That includes all the Super Mario Advance games, the Donkey Kong Country ports, and more. Having max lives was common in those ports which made the game even easier than it was before. -_-
