It's mostly about the complexity of the game and the puzzles you have to solve.. Something like Earthbound might be more challenging than say F.E.A.R. today, but overall games have mostly stayed the same. There's always going to be your challenging games and than the games you breeze right through

Old games are definitely harder. Nowadays they just make really long, easy games.

I believe it varies, because games like Pokemon , even with the updates and improvements, the game itself has gotten easier. I've played some newer rpgs and they seem easier than the old versions on the games themselves.

The older games were certainly harder. Megaman games aren't a problem for me, but think about games like Ninja Gaiden. Games like that took days and days of practice.

New Games are harder but with the use of guides, walkthroughs, cheats which makes them easier compare that of the old games which you dont have to rely too much for a guide to help you...

I think it depends on the gamers. For those who've played tons throughout their lives, they're probably more experienced with erevy problem & know how to assess the situation in front of them, so it probably gets easier for them to play. For the rookies who started playing or those don't play very often, they won't know the difference, they'll probably just think games are all the same...

older games definitely require harder work i think... some of them you can't save on at all and w/e. like final fantasy and w/e... just because theres more to think about like in FFTA doesnt mean its harder.

Older games are FAR harder than new games. Having the player spend hours running around the world is not hard. Having the player spend hours trying to beat the first boss because he button mashed through the entire level is hard. (Most of us are guilty of that in Ninja Gaiden/Black/Sigma)

one of the key things that makes any old game harder is the lack of good technology regarding the controls, some of the controls r just awkward and have a slippery feel to them, making the game barely playable.

I really think the entire reason older games are harder than the newer ones just because of the simplicity of the older games. Think, you only had two buttons on the older controllers, which were more than likely attack and jump.Newer games tend to have Double Jump Abilities, strafing, guarding, dashing, back flips, teleporting, inventory space, demon charge, life bars, regeneration, shields, food, and all kinds of stuff to keep our puny pathetic lives living just a little bit longer. That, and you remember those old text based games, with no graphics to help you? Jesus, you wonder where they went.

I think what makes the new games harder is they consume more time to play, at the same time the old games may be shorter but they lack the ability to save data making it frustrating for players to repeat playing through those games.

I agree...old games are definitely harder.. i mean just look at the way super mario was played on the SNES!, i mean one hit and you're OUTTA THERE!nowadays, you can get hit like 4 or 5 times, and then you croak. Especially agree with the fact that there were no guides for legendary games such as Megaman III, Final Fantasy I and II and Super Mario, making life a bit harder for the gamer.Nowadays, all you have to do is spend around £5 or $5 extra (depending on where you are in the world!) and you'll have a book that tells you where everything is to give you that 100% completion feeling...which is kinda cheap, when you didnt really achieve it yourself.

old games are def a lot harder.... games these days are sort of easy but i still think most games are challenging

Seems like everyone is going for older games being harder. I'm not so sure. I remember with an old game you'd often get to a certain level and just get stuck until you got sick of it and stopped playing the game. At least with newer games there is often more than one way of solving a problem. Also they make a lot of games easier these days just so they can sell them to young kids
