Wookiefoot is amazing for its mix of hip hop, hippie, reggae, and pop. So glad I was introduced to this hippie band by my cousin! The Murder City Devils is also nice (relatively), and has a lot of energy! Another band I was introduced to by a cousin. The Breeders, which is a spin-off side project of Kim Deal from the Pixies, was also intruduced to me by the cousin who showed me Wookiefoot.Wow, I got a lot from that cousin X_X.Shiina Ringo, and Tokyo Jihen are also great obscure Japanese bands (though tokyo jihen is a side project by Shiina Ringo).Edit: I totally forgot this little ska band I found on myspace called Robert. They are love and win! I hope I can get more of their songs soon. It's roberttheband on myspace for those curious about them.

Bands of which I like that can be considered strange or obscure. Let's see. . . I guess there's Primus. Old Red Hot Chili Peppers (from the 80s) can be thrown in there as well. Might as well include Pink Floyd and Electric Apricot and Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains and Les Claypool's Frog Brigade. Sure, why not, The Mars Volta. That's good enough for now. Wait, I'll add Calico Cat in there as well before I part.

Racer X are a really good band, although I'm not sure whether they're obscure or not, since people know them through Paul Gilbert's role in Mr. Big.I'll also recommend 70s Judas Priest, Judas Priest themselves are not obscure (in fact, they're one of the most popular heavy metal bands ever) but if you ask an average person what Priest songs they know, chances are they'll answer with "Breaking the Law, Painkiller, Electric Eye or You've Got Another Thing Comin'", unaware of the fact that Priest's best material was in the 70s.Sleep Terror are a really good instrumental death metal band who blend technical death metal instrumentals with elements of jazz in their songs.Watchtower is a great obscure technical/progressive thrash metal band, in fact they may have been the very first progressive metal band. Very underrated and extremely good.Kenny Wayne Shepherd is a really good blues guitarist, I'm going to go out on a limg and say he's just as good as Stevie Ray Vaughan so if you like SRV you'll probably like Kenny Wayne Shepherd too.Cacophony...gotta love Jason Becker and Marty Friedman's dual shredding...Impaled! If you love Carcass, you'll love these guys, Impaled is the biggest Carcass worship band out there. And I might as well just recommend the entire NWOBHM movement as well. Pretty much every NWOBHM band is obscure and awesome (Blitzkrieg, Angel Witch and Diamond Head FTW) if you decide to look further than Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.Heathen is an underrated thrash metal band, although I have no idea why, they're probably the only 80s thrash band to still be producing 80s thrash metal now. You can download mp3s of their songs at their website http://www.heathenmetal.com

My favorites of those are "Blutengel" and "Never VOID"... But I think there are much german bands who don't say anything to a american, like "Culta Ferrox"... They also have there own style of music...

Aussy band, Tsunami Bomb. I guess they are more mainstream than most obscure bands, but not many people have heard of them.

Rhapsody of Fire is about the only really obscure band that I listen to.However I do listen to some weird music, and Supertramp might be the band with the weirdest songs I've heard. Except maybe the Doors.

Hmm...Rhapsody isn't too obscure, they're probably one of the more popular power metal bands.

I've been listening to a lot of Dimension zero lately...And I doubt anyone who's into technical metal will have heard of them... But between the buried and me? I've found that most people who listen to them tend to be musicians (myself included) who just sit there and gawp at the inhuman fingerwork in a demented, trance like state of total obscuirity (myself included once again).Thought to be entirely honest, they're not unknown at all. They're signed to Victory records for frag's sake.=D

I work at a local music venue and a couple of weeks ago, we had this great band called The Exhaustion Method play. If you've heard Tub Ring, they reminded me a lot of them. Real fun, energetic, great music.

They're all pretty well known round here. I guess it depends where you are? I'd say Tool, but I know they're quite well known in USA, but not where I am.

I was quite surprised to find a large number of posts in this thread with lots of bands I'd never heard of. Was expecting more posts like the one two above me.Here are some of mine:BlindsideCold War KidsCSSCut Off Your HandsThe Receiving End of SirensThe Sea and CakeZolof the Rock and Roll DestroyerIt's really hard to work out which bands I like are obscure, because they're not obscure to me but that doesn't mean that other people will have heard of them. I ended up cutting the list quite short to try and be on the safe side.

the beatles lolNo seriously, anyone heard of Marjorie Fair? I think they're pretty obscure, since I haven't found a single person who knows them yet. They're a great band if you like stuff like Pink Floyd or even Radiohead.
