i prefer set characters. for me, the character system of ff5 was the best. you got to choose what classes the characters could have an you could modify the abilities those classes had (eg. white mage with loads of HP)

I think it's best to create the main character and then get some premade later.

Yeah, that's a good point. I rather games where you can choose your character, instead of have them handed to you.But i also don't like when the game gives you 4 or more characters to take care of and train. (with the exception of Chrono Trigger!)It's a lot more fun if you can select a single character and build them up the way you want to.

See, games like Disgaea work in my opinion. You have a set cast (Laharl, Etna, etc) which works great for the story, but the second battle comes, you can use nothing but the characters YOU create. But I feel a lot of RPGs force you to be a character in the game.

i agree, the main charactor keep their stroy moving, but you can have fun making the rest of the cast. i enjoy creating my own charactor, though sometimes it's more fun to create a charactor then to play the game ^_^

Well, I guess I'd prefer created characters if only because they're more interesting. I mean as nice as it was to create an All-Knight party in Dragon Warrior III, it didn't exactly help the plot since the generic characters don't add much to things. And I don't find MOST of the characters in these newer RPGs THAT annoying aside from a few (I agree on FFVII being filled with annoying characters). However, Tidus had good personality and provided a plot that couldn't be told if he was a generic character. The funny thing is when I read the subject of this, I thought this was a debate whether we like customizable characters or characters with set abilities. For example, FF12 allows you to fully customize every character to be whatever you want them to be or to be good at basically everything while FF4 (II) has set classes with a mage, dragoon, knight, etc. Out of that, I kind of perfer the set classes. If you can customize every character then it kind of kills the choice of using multiple characters. However when the classes are set, it makes you use different characters since their unique skills are useful in different situations...it adds more strategy I think. But that's just me...Stevo

I like having fixed characters that you can name, but not change the appearance. It just seems too complicated to have to create your own character.

I love creating my own character, Feels like im more interactive with the game. Altough, Somtimes the game makes good characters I don't mind playing. (Edge, Squall, Mario =p, Ect. ) And then I don't mind because I like there personality. So, As long as the main character has a decently good personality, Im fine with being forced into them.

Depends how story driven the plot is. It's no surprise that the less pre-set detail a character has, the less important they are to the plot. Sure the main points are there, but alot is disambigious. However a plotline that has all characters preset, if you don't like them your shafted, but their all in the plotline immensely.Depends on how serious the game is. Pokemon could go with a whatever on character development. Final Fantasy would be crap though if you didn't have presets.

Oh, create a character is definitely better. An RPG is supposed to immerse you in the storyline and make you feel like you are actually a part of it. How are you going to do that if you have no control over what your character even looks like?

I sometimes like a little of both i like the customize option but i like it when i don't have to do anything at all. I only like it when thereas something i want to change but i can't which sucks.

I guess making your own character is nice, but it irritates me when I can't say anything at all and the other characters do the talking for you.And it makes me more attached to the game sometimes if it was a set character. It tends to depend how awesome the plot is.

I absolutely love it when characters are fully customizable. I don't like having preset characters. Something that kind of bugs me though, is that after you make them you get less and less choices with what to do. Dark Law seems to fill in the type of thing I like in a JRPG. God help the preset characters, I don't mind it if a character's perspective is rather iffy, but if they even go so far as to hold a separate philosophy on life than me then they're completely unlikable. Part of the reason Dragon Quest appeals to me.

Both possibilities are fine if made right. Premade character offers more chances for plot to develop (scriptwriter knows what kind of character you're playing, so he can make use of that character background, sex, skills, age etc).On the other hand fully customizable character offers much more possibilities when it comes to the way you wish to play the game - stealth, full contact or maybe frying everything on your path from a safe distance?First option requires a well written plot with a lot of refferences to character's life, skills and choices made, whereas the second - a possibility to overcome obstacles in more than one way. Both are seen in games much more rarely than I'd wish to.
