Else I'd get them via torrents.

Steam, GOG, and GreenmanGaming. I usually buy when there's a sale or an offer.

I get my games from large stores. Target, Best Buy...etc. Sometimes I go to places like Gamestop, and occasionally I go and buy them from places like Toys r Us and Amazon. It depends on where I am and what mood I am in really, though if I intend to buy a game, I go and buy it.

When I buy games, I usually purchase them on steam. But for older games that I don't think are worth spending money on anymore, I just torrent it.

I usually go to gamestop but if they don't have what I'm looking for then I go on amazon, but if it's a really old game then I will just download it.

I buy mine unless they're pretty old, can't find them on the market or anywhere really, which leads to DL eventually

I usually buy games that are 1-2 years old after they go 75% off on Steam. I try not to buy new games until I finish my current ones.

Humble Bundles. Really good games for really cheap. The Origin and Sid Meier bundles gave me a ton to play through, and only for a couple bucks.

Karma is a b**** there is no better way to put it. I'm working on a game right now and when I finish it I don't want it to get pirated into oblivion, so I buy all my games, primarily through steam, but I have other resources for PC, and I also have consoles. I usually buy those games new if I have the money to support the developer. Piracy is bad kids, but if you want to download it because there is no demo and you want to try it out? No biggie, just please support the dev by buying it.

All my games are usually purchased at this point.
The only time I really pirate any game is when it's a game that is so old it's not findable through any normal means / purchasing them from a site not bringing any profit to the original creator since the companies closed down long ago.

I pirate the game, try the game out. If I like the game I'll buy it on steam or something after finishing it. If I don't like it I instantly uninstall the game and that'll be that (I never finish the games that I don't like.).
Aka pirating is quality control for me.

With all the sales, it's a lot easier to afford the downloadable games. Most of the games I buy are $15 or less. Sometimes I'll buy a game, if i really like it, for $35-40.

Being a game developer myself I buy PC games. Usually I buy via digital download. Sadly digital downloads aren't really that big in console gaming and the average console game gets bought and resold about 6 times. As a dev that means less $$$ for me. It would be interesting to do a special pricing for digital download like $5 or something.

Then out of curiosity why are you here then? Not saying get out or anything. just one of those legit curiosity of why a game dev would join a site like this.
As for staying on topic though. I'm the type that avoids certain companies due to certain practices but otherwise buys games while the games are still in circulation that are actually of interest to me but only after I make sure I am going to like it (usually after the reviews and what not come out.) For those that I am unsure of or are out of circulation I will pirate before I buy a used copy because the ones that made the game in the first place don't get anything out of a used copy being resold. Therefore the only ones that lose are places like gamestop, flea market salespeople, etc.

I recently discovered the joys of Steam. I can't believe it took me this long to be converted to it. Not to sound like a Steam salesperson, but it makes the whole search, purchase and download process so much easier - and more legal, too.

As true as that is, I don't like the mixed marketplace that steam now has. You can find Ubisoft and EA games and what not on there. I'm not sure about other non valve/indie companies, but these two require you to have their game stores installed to buy the games through steam. Which I find kinda missleading. "So you want that new Fifa game and it's somehow on steam? Sorry but you have to install Origin to get this game as well." I think that sort of crap shouldn't be allowed. If you are making your game available on competing companies system, then deal with their copy protection setups, don't force your own.I recently discovered the joys of Steam. That's actually really useful to know. I hadn't come across that yet, since I haven't gone for any Ubisoft and EA games on Steam yet. That does seem like quite an inconvenience.
Your mention of "the mixed marketplace" is an interesting one. Is your issue just with the extra installation or also the mix between big names and indie companies?
