I'd check out LOTR Online, WOW and if they were free as regards time (ie the world stopped whenever you wanted to play games) then the entire FF series

World of Warcraft. No question about it. No other game comes close, due to interacting with LIVING players instead of AI characters everywhere (though there are a lot of them in WoW). I only restrain myself from playing it because it is SO expensive.
