hmmmm i actually think it's because it is seen as a lucky number example craps(the game people) slots barret lucky 7'sIt goes back to Hebrew Tradition. Check Leviticus/Numbers and you see all kinds of sevens. Also God created Earth in seven days. It all ties together, man.

I think with games that have 8, it's more 7+1 than 8, because it's like the 7 forces fall in the middle of the hero and the 1, or the antagonist. Like in Mario 3, how Koopa attacked the 7 surrounding kingdoms only as a ruse to capture the princess, or in Zelda, how the 7 of whoever you're trying to find all join together at the 8th and final temple. But as other people have been saying, there are really just higher sources for 7. It's the holy number, it's the lucky number, and it's the benevolent number.I just noticed in Super Mario Bros 2: 7 WorldsNow i see it could also be 88 Worlds in Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario: Bros 3Honestly i expected in super Mario Bros. 2 to be 8 worlds but then i saw that boss...

It's probably because seven is widely considered a lucky number. Psychologically, someone may feel lucky playing a game that has seven somethings in it.I think you would better take a look at article for 7 on wikipedia. You will be astonished how special 7 is!Seven On Wikipedia
