I've had a newer model (one with an HDMI port.) For about a year. It hasn't crapped out on me yet, despite very long amounts of playtime. I think it's pretty safe if you keep the system in an open area and keep it off the carpet.

I have gotten the red rings of death 4 times in 3 years. I've had my console replaced 3 times free of charge and once ai had to pay for shipping. It's annoying, but not the end of the world. just call the hotline and they will tell you what you need to do, most of the time free of charge. 2-4weeks replacement time

I think I would have nightmares if I got the red ringd of death. My first xbox 360 was scratching my disks, and so I got it replaced free. Been happy since.

Just hope you don't get it! Red Ring = Failure to your 360.

XD My brother and I have had two of them get the Red Ring. Microsuck sent us new ones after we sent the malfunctional one back. It's sort of a set-back, but we did find that the "Towel Trick" worked for us, at least temporarily. My friend Jason said he smacked his really hard when it red-ring'd, and it fixed itself, but said he didn't recommend it.Edit: And we've had them break differently, too. The first time we didn't have a fan, so we got one for the second one, and it broke regardless. It seems to be random in our experience; we moved the first one around a lot, so figured that might have been the cause, but we didn't move the second one at all and it still broke, even with the fan on it, and nothing touching it or anything near it.

After the 360 came out, users began to have problems with their consoles. they had the "red ring of death" i believe it had something to do with a heat dissapation problem in the system. it was overheating. i believe that they fixed the problem with the newer units. there isn't too much that you can do about it. if you buy an external cooling unit, it could cause problems and it voids your warrenty. i just suggest putting it in an open area not crowded and not to leave it on for extended periods of time.

Yeh...I actually turned mine in around last Christmas. Pretty much the "Red Ring of Death" just refers to the three flashing red lights on the xbox front ring (where your controller indicator lights are) If you have 1, 2, or 4 flashing lights you have a different problem but the 3 rings indicates a complete shut down of the internal hardware of the xbox (not your hardrive). Microsoft will take care of you however, just contact their support line (1-800-469-9269) and they'll give you instructions on how to ship your Xbox back to headquarters (they'll send you extra materials and a prepaid box in the mail) They'll either fix it or more likely send you a new console. The wait time is terrible but atleast you won't have to pay. If your 360 was manufactured after 2003 (I'm not clear on this so don't quote me), I think your supposed to be void of this defect.

The red ring should have been a issue fixed by Microsoft AGES ago, though it really isn't just that, Microsoft should have fixed all the issues of their console a long while ago, I'v went through 3 now.. I'm angry that my latest one just keeps freezing uncontrolably , though no red ring, right before GTA4 came out. Since I actually do own a PS3 also ( and a Wii actually) I had to get it on the PS3 instead, which is kinda lame, since the online isn't near as polished + no achievements.
