not too many differences, seemed to be a marketing ploy at the time just to sell more games. they could have just as easily had all 151 in one game.

its to promote interactivity between people, the red had some pokemon that blue didnt have and vice versa, if you wanted to get all pokemon you would have to trade with people, if all the pokemon was on game it would be boring, cuz everyone would have the same pokemon and what not

Unlike Gold/Silver, in which the order you caught your legendary Pokemon was also changed, the only difference between Red and Blue is the Pokemon that you can capture (trainers all have the same Pokemon, so you can see a Pokemon that's only in the other version when you look in your Pokedex, but you can never catch it); you have to trade with the other version for those Pokemon. Oh, and when you start, the preset names are different (Red for you and Blue for rival in Red version, and vice versa for Blue), not that it matters. As long as you had at least one back then, you were all right.

For red and blue, some pokemon you cant catch and have to trade. For yellow you can also get all starters, pokemon have color, and you can get a mew with a glitch. For gold ho-oh has sacred fire and lugia doesnt have aeroblast. For silver, Lugia has aeroblast and ho-oh doesnt have sacred fire. For crystal, not diamond, you catch suicune without finding it randomly, you get different item from the guy in goldenrod city after beating team rocket there, and the pokemon move in battle i think.
