The element carbon in earth's atmosphere is usually in trace amounts, usually 1~4% , combined with the molecule carbon dioxide. It is measured in parts per million. Concentration can vary considerably depending on urbanisation: in urban areas it is generally higher, and indoors can reach above higher than atmospheric concentrations.

Dissolution or Solvation, is the process of attraction and association of molecules of a solvent with molecules or ions of a solute. As ions dissolve in a solvent they spread out and become surrounded by solvent molecules. The bigger the ion, the more solvent molecules are able to surround it and the more it becomes solvated.
