I think its cheating, unlike a college paper, when a video game is played, its intended that you can finish it with your own skill or luck or whatever. On a college paper, if you don't cite sources, you fail the paper and/or get accused of plagiarism..

Pretty much exactly what this guy said. However, there are some cases where using a guide isn't a bad thing. For example, anybody remember the Zodiac Spear from FFXII? That was a horrible game design and a walkthrough was needed to even know about that chest.

I'd say it's not cheating if you're stuck or you don't know what to do or you 2nd+ Time playing it again. I'd say it's cheating if you're using it on your first time playing the game and you're not stuck.

I rarely use walkthroughs, because I don't like plot spoilers. However, if there are certain parts that are almost impossible to figure out, such as kneeling with a red crystal equipped to summon a tornado (which is a situation in Castlevania II: Simon's Quest), I feel that a walkthrough is necessary.

I don't consider walkthroughs cheating for the fact that it more reveals what is going to happen and what is needed to happen. So I consider them more or less as Spoilers, though I have noticed some Spoiler-Free walkthroughs in my time.

I'm half and half on walkthrough usage. Some games I use a walkthrough right off the bat. Some I use after I beat the game, and games I revisit without use of a walkthrough I play using one to get at any tidbits I missed. :D

walkthroughs are not considered cheating if you do not keep following them, if you only use it for the parts you are suck and cannot absolutely find what to do then walkthroughs are to be used otherwise it would be close to say as cheating.

I like using walkthroughs because if I don't I become frustrated with the game and end up not continuing with it. I don't think its cheating. It is a way a guide.

Nope, it's okay if you get stuck. But if you use walkthrough on the whole game, for me, that's cheating.

Judging a person does not define who they are.
It defines who you are.

NO!!! I'm using the epic no in honor of Chuggaaconroy. Besides, it's good to know where to go, what to do, and how to do it.

I wouldn't say that it was cheating, but I tend to try my best at playing the game first before using one. Plus some JRPGs that have "true endings" that require you to do ridiculous things that require tons of backtracking almost beg to use a walk through or strategy guide

Depends if youre playing the game just for fun or competition. Say a friend and you are tyring to see who can beat a game sooner, well then itd be cheating. If it's just for fun then it's fine!

No it's not cheating. It's getting some help when you're stuck.

Using a walkthrough you're cheating yourself out of fun and excitement, but I wouldn't say in particular that it's "cheating". In my opinion cheating is giving yourself unfair advantages, more like cheat codes or hacking would do. Walkthroughs are just you saying 'Okay I don't like spending ours searching for hidden crap or grinding through dungeons. Save me some time and show me exactly what I have to do'. While that's certainly not something I myself enjoy doing, I think it's perfectly fine since not everyone has a ton of spare time, and would rather get through the game and to the parts they personally really like.

I would not say that walkthroughs are cheating; rather, they provide guidance, as many people have already said. Personally, I use walkthroughs when I get stuck and the answer just won't come to me, even after I've tried my best to analyze the situation. Otherwise, I find it fun to work out all the trappings of a game on my own.

That's the most ridiculous this I've ever heard (no offense, i know the question was legit). Why would something that basically helps you through the game be cheating, especially when you're stuck and need help/advise. I can see why they would be considered cheating, but that's kinda silly. Cheating is way more cheap than using a walkthrough. I mean, there's a reason cheats need codes to work, otherwise they'd be too easy to use! :P I mean if you think about it, we can use cheats anytime, anywhere and during any boss fight. Codes to make you stronger, faster, live longer or even not die at all. Imo that's what's considered cheating, when you make the game that easy for you! It's my personal policy towards every game that I allow myself to beat it first before having fun and using cheats. And, yes when i'm stuck or miss something i'll use a walkthrough, who doesn't. :P But, seriously it's not cheating.

I wouldn't call it cheating, but it does take away from games.

I remember playing Jak II on ps2 with a walkthrough guide. At first I used for helpful boss fighting tips, but it got to the point where i wasn't playing the game for fun anymore.

For me, it's not.
Just like what you (OP) said, it's a guide when you're stuck and you need to progress through your game.
Also, games are treated as games, to entertain. If you want to play by your own, it's cool. If you want guides, that's cool too.

I wouldn't consider using a walkthrough cheating if you use when you're really stuck on a game and you just can't beat it.i would consider it cheating If you used it without trying the game out first.
