When i think of boss battles, Sephiroth and kefka come to mind, but i will never forget getting destroyed so many times in the past by Ozma in Final Fantasy IX.

No boss fights from the games I've played have struck me as awesome, thought that might just be a fault of my memory. The first "great" boss that bubbles from my memory is the giant Bowser from Yoshi's Island. I haven't played Punch-Out, but I've heard that Mr. Dream/Mike Tyson is a spectacular fight. (by the way, Punch-Out is an example of a bosses-only game made long before SotC! And they're just as big, too ^^;)

I touched upon this in another thread, talking about bosses in general. I proposed Yoshi's Island's final boss, the gigantic Bowser. I'd say it's "great" - especially on a first playthrough, when you don't understand his patterns as clearly (and can't navigate the stage as fluently!). Though frankly, many final bosses in games have underwhelmed me. Bowser does fine in Super Mario Bros. 3, but doesn't distinguish himself (it's hard to, with such a great game). Bowser in Super Mario World was bleh - maybe the best part of the game, but not one of the best of all video games. I have not finished Punch-Out, but Mr. Dream is said to be one of the greatest bosses of all time.I would propose Rainbow Road in Super Mario Kart, if that counts.

I really love Kefka, but the one I fought the most as a youngling was Lavos in Chrono Trigger...I must've beaten him at least 250 times.

Wiegraf in FFT. Memorable for being annoying as hell. Another memorable one was fighting against Asch in The Glorious Land Eldrant, because of Karma playing during the fight.
