I got my ps2 in 2001. It has broken many times. How ever, I have managed fix the system every time. Cleaning it is similer to cleaning a DVD player.

My ps2 stopped playing ps2 games and now only plays original ps games. The reason for this is my ps2 is one of the originals and a few years back I started getting disc read errors. Being the cheap ass I was, I refused to pay anyone who knew what they were doing to clean it, so I found a guide online, broke open the warranty seal, and fixed it myself, no problem. Well about 6 months later, Sony announced that they were douche bags and where now going to start fixing the disc read error problem for free (the problem was that the laser would set itself too far away from the disc to read it) and you would just have to send it in with the warranty seal still on and no damaged. Oh man was I pissed. Needless to say, it eventually stopped playing all ps2 games and now I'm thinking of investing in a damn ps3 with backward compatibility....Oh the pain to my checking account!

While - most likely - not broken, I replaced my original PlayStation 2 with a slim one because it heavily scratched one of my DVD disks. I wasn't going to take any chances of playing my games/DVDs on that PS2.

I had a big ps2, but after two years it broke. I replaced it with a smaller one. So worth it and so much better!

Mine is getting a little slow in its old age, and I worry it could give out any time now, but it just keeps on truckin'. I have had it for years now, giving it a good workout along the way (we're talking HUNDREDS of hours) and it's still alive. I think you pretty much have to abuse your ps2 regularly to get it to break. Unless you bought one of those flimsy slim ones.
